Selah
I was watching a video on youtube, a clip from the Passion of the Christ that always makes me cry (when Jesus falls and Mary runs to comfort Him, recalling when He was a little child and he fell and skinned His knee." Someone commented, "wow, people really need to look up to Mary. She was such a wonderful woman." And then someone replied, "Why? I'd rather look up to Queen Elizabeth. Mary was nothing special, just a surrogate mother!" .... Do people honestly believe that garbage? I need to stay off youtube.
dominicansoul
i usually watch the video and NOT look at the comments...most of the time they are pretty ridiculous....
rhetoricfemme
Sigh. What an unfortunate and incomprehensible mindset! It's almost the same as why I have to force myself never to read the comments in any news story. I'd rather believe in the goodness and faith of humanity. Not the cynical sad parts. MithLuin
Religious comments on YouTube are written to provoke, and thus are extremely inflammatory. To a certain mindset, it's amusing to say things that will make people angry behind a mask of anonymity. Very immature, but then, some people may view it as speaking your mind or saying what you 'really think' - something you presumably wouldn't dare to say around religious people in person. Regardless, it's a very silly thing to say. It's suggesting that Jesus and Mary were not genetically related. I'm pretty sure that there was no such thing as surrogate motherhood back then (though there were wet nurses), and that no one has ever questioned who his mother is [presumably there are those who quibble about his father].
Just for the record, even I, a non-Catholic, see Mary as something special, and would never think of saying she was "just a surrogate mother." And, also, although they may exist, I have never met a non-Catholic who was afraid of expressing the view that Mary was special (and certainly more than just a "surrogate mother") for fear of being called Catholic (or for any other reason). Even in the callow days of my youth when I hung out with a lot of Evangelical Protestants, I never heard this view of Mary (just as I never heard anyone say to someone else "You're talking/thinking like a Catholic" as an insult). All non-Catholics are neither stupid nor disrespectful of the Catholic church. Edited June 29, 2010 by IgnatiusofLoyola
Selah
Oh I know that. Read my first quote. The person I quoted also professed to be a Protestant. I thought it was pretty cool

A non-Catholic actually painted the painting I use for my avatar. He said that he was inspired after meditating on the wonderful privilage Our Lady had in carrying the Son of God in her womb for 9 months... ...i think it is a very beautiful painting... Innocent
YouTube does somehow tend to bring out the worst in people. It's best to ignore the comments and just watch the videos, I'd say. Bennn
I've learned not to read the comments section, like it has been mentioned above. Usually when I do take a look, I regret it. Most of it is very immature indeed, I suppose that is the fate of all 'big' websites that have comments sections, which is a sad thing. +Pax Domini, Ben
