VeraMaria
I'm sort of confused , what's the difference between a green and a brown scapular? Are they the same? Which one is the "original" one?? ??????
Mary's Knight, La
i'm not familiar with the origins of the green scapular, however the origins of the brown lie in a vision given to St. Simon Stock, and say that if one wears the brown scapular in conjunction with a faithful life, one will receive the grace to be able to be in a state of salvific grace at the time of death. The graces associated with the green are healing (mostly spiritual) and conversion, I hope this helps some.
benedict_x
There's no "original". Our Blessed Mother gave us one means of converting a loved one when she appeared to Sister Justine Bisqueyburu in 1840 carrying the cloth of conversion---the Green Scapular. She said, 'This holy badge of my Immaculate Heart is to be the means of conversion of souls...' Over a six year period our Lady appeared many times to Sister Justine and answered her many questions concerning the scapular and its usage. Our Lady said the Green Scapular needs no special blessing nor does one need to be invested or enrolled in it. Any priest may bless it. It may be worn or carried by the person you wish to benefit. It may even be placed unknown to the individual in his or her clothes, bed or room should they refuse to take it or wear it. Concerning the power of the Green Scapular with regard to conversions, remember confidence in the Mother of God is the key. She said,"The greatest graces come from using the scapular but these graces come in direct proportion to the degree of confidence in me which the user has." Everyday one should say the prayer, 'IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY, PRAY FOR US NOW AND AT THE HOUR OF OUR DEATH.' If the person for whom the scapular is intended will not say the prayer then the one who gives the scapular must say it in his or her place, everyday. What it is. First of all, a scapular is part of the religious habits of many orders. It is a long strip of cloth, the width of the body, worn over the shoulders (scapula) from the ankles in front to the ankles in back. While a very practical garment it has come to represent the special consecration of the religious life. By analogy to the scapulars of religious, there are small scapulars that are derived from them which represent a particular devotion or spirituality, usually associated with a particular community. Such a scapular is two pieces of cloth (generally about an inch square), connected by cords and worn over the head. It often has a picture or a particular color, depending on the spirituality it stands for. The best known and most highly esteemed scapular, and the one most favored by the Church and by the Blessed Virgin in many of her apparitions, is the Brown Scapular of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel. It is adapted from the scapular of the Carmelite Order and represents a special Consecration to Our Lady under the title of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel. Those who wear it practice it a special devotion to Mary. In the past this was the Little Office of Our Lady, but can be commuted by any priest to the rosary. In addition the person has a special entrustment of themselves to Mary for their salvation. This, in fact, has been promised to those who faithfully wear the scapular - meaning exterior and interior fidelity. The promise "Those who die wearing this scapular shall not suffer eternal fire" must not be understood superstitiously or magically, but in light of Catholic teaching that perseverance in faith, hope and love are required for salvation. The scapular is a powerful reminder of this Christian obligation. Enrollment. The first scapular worn must be blessed by a priest or deacon - a simple blessing or that of the "Book of Blessings" or the old Roman Ritual. Subsequent scapulars do not have to be blessed (it transfers, as it were). The Scapular is then placed over the head of the recipient. Again the formula of the "Book of Blessings" may be used or simply a prayer to Mary recited (e.g. Hail Mary). The person is now "invested" in the scapular and "enrolled" in the Confraternity of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel or Scapular Confraternity. No notification of anyone is needed. It used to be possible for lay persons to receive the indult from the Carmelites to invest others in the scapular. Since the laity cannot bless an object they must use a previously blessed scapular. However, this is no longer the case. Previously granted indults remain in effect, however.
