Guest Darren9592
I don't see anything wrong with someone wearing a Rosary around their neck or even around their wrist. Maybe the sight of it might cause someone to ask the person wearing it what it is, or even ask them how to pray the rosary. But then again, I've seen plenty of people wearing a rosary around their neck with the crucifix torn off of it, that really makes me mad & I hate to see that. I reckon I'll just carry on keeping my rosary in my pocket & let the fashion police arrest me if they want
Mary Veronica
I concur with goldenchild17, it depends on who's wearing it, and who witnesses it. In that case IF in the end, the Blessed Virgin Mary is pleased, we won't have any more reasons not to be pleased. From the Secret of the Rosary: Quote 8th Rose ...Our Lady blesses not only those who preach her Rosary, but she highly rewards all those who get others to say it by their example. Alphonsus, King of Leon and Galicia, very much wanted all his servants to honor the Blessed Virgin by saying the Rosary. So he used to hang a large rosary on his belt and always wore it, but unfortunately never said it himself. Nevertheless his wearing it encouraged his courtiers to say the Rosary very devoutly. One day the King fell seriously ill and when he was given up for dead he found himself, in a vision, before the judgement seat of Our Lord. Many devils were there accusing him of all the sins he had committed and Our Lord as Sovereign Judge was just about to condemn him to hell when Our Lady appeared to intercede for him. She called for a pair of scales and had his sins placed in one of the balances whereas she put the rosary that he had always worn on the other scale, together with all the Rosaries that had been said because of his example. It was found that the Rosaries weighed more than his sins. Looking at him with great kindness Our Lady said: "As a reward for this little honor that you paid me in wearing my Rosary, I have obtained a great grace for you from my Son. Your life will be spared for a few more years. See that you spend these years wisely, and do penance."
Lil Red
There isn't actually anything inherently wrong with wearing a rosary around one's neck. If I had no place for my rosary on my person aside from around my neck, surely I would wear it around my neck rather than go without one just because of a lack of pockets. There are some brown scapulars designed to also be able to be used as a rosary. I'm sure no one would critique someone for wearing that and also using it as a rosary. There needs to be a clear distinction between wearing a rosary as a fashion statement and wearing a rosary as a sacramental. The former has problems, the latter has none whatsoever. It used to be that those praying the rosary during mass would put the rosary around their neck as they went up for communion. That way they could fold their hands underneath the altar rail and not be dangling their rosaries.
+1 - great response!
rhetoricfemme
Some kid got suspended for wearing one and he claimed it was religious expression. I wish a bishop had slapped him in the forehead.
He was wearing that rosary in memorial of his brother, who was hit by a car while riding his bicycle. That particular rosary belonged to his brother, who held it in his hands for the duration of his hospital stay, up until his death. He was also wearing it because his uncle had passed away weeks before the superintendent told him to remove it. From what I understand, it's not a sin to wear the rosary if it's more of a sacramental thing, and not merely a piece of jewelry. If there is an official teaching that says otherwise, please let me know. Edited June 15, 2010 by rhetoricfemme
MargaretTeresa
Yeah, there are loads of hoodlums (aka, saggy pantaloons, flatbilled hats, tattoos and wife beater shirts) on my campus who wears them. I really wanna ask about them. I have never seen any of the "hoodlums" at the Mass I attend, but that doesn't mean they don't go to one of the other Sunday Mass. And that's assuming they don't go home every weekend and go to Mass there.
Nihil Obstat
In the time since this thread came up, I have started wearing a rosary every day under my shirt.
Peter John
What I've seen is lots of people with them tattooed on their necks.
Gotcha beat. I know an exotic dancer who has it tatooed on her lower leg. If she uses it for devotion, is it wrong to have it there? Peter John
In the time since this thread came up, I have started wearing a rosary every day under my shirt.
Before becoming Catholic, when I first started praying the rosary, I wore one regularly around my neck, but I did use it to pray with. I stopped wearing it that way because I kept catching it on things and breaking them, though I have broken as many pulling them out of my pockets. Peter John
Well, my question wasn't so much in response to him, as it was a question I've been wondering and it just happened to fit here. Because I've always been taught that it's disrespectful to wear a rosary because it's not a piece of jewelry. But then I was thinking about the rosary bracelets, and wondering why that is okay, and then it came up here, so I asked.
I have understood that wearing a rosary is fine as long as it is not just for a fashion statement.
Peter John
Years ago I channel flipped and saw Mr. T wearing a big rosary around his neck and talking on TBN--a Protestant channel. That particular rosary was the exact same kind that I've seen given to children for prayer or decoration in their room. My little brother has had his since he was a baby. I find it odd when "pimps" wear crucifixes as fashion statements.
TBN actually carries some Catholic programming. Don't want to lock the biggest single block of Christians in the world out of the market completely, I guess.

cmaD2006
off topic: I like Groo the Wander's idea of locking threads. Definitely. . Although I'd suggest setting the time limit to 6 months. That way I'm not caught re-reading threads such as this one thinking it was opened today! Grrrr .....
