Clare~Therese
I tried to read The Fellowship of the Rin.g and The Hobbit before (I think?) but it's not me cup of tea, I guess. I think I got farther in The Hobbit? I don't remember anymore. But Tolkien's still a really cool guy. I did a book report a few years ago about a biography of him. MithLuin
Was it Humphrey Carpenter's biography? That is generally well done, though it is clear that Carpenter doesn't understand the importance of the Catholic faith in Tolkien's life. Meaning, he knew it was important to him, but kinda floundered to explain it. Joseph Pearce and Peter Kreeft do a better (though still rather limited) job of exploring Catholic themes in his work. And to understand him as a professor of Old English, you'd be best reading Tom Shippey. I've heard high praise for John Garth's 'Tolkien and the Great War' about his time as a soldier in WWI, but I've not yet read it myself. They're making a movie of The Hobbit for next year, so maybe you'll prefer that to the book, Clare-Therese .

MithLuin
Here's Jef Murray chanting 'Earendil was a mariner,' Bilbo's poem from the Hall of Fire in Elrond's house. Skip ahead to 3:23 if you just want to hear him singing without the intro. And here is a choral version of 'A Elbereth Gilthoniel' from the Extended Edition of the Fellowship of the Ring movie. Innocent
I spotted a copy of The Legend of Sigurd and Gudrn in a bookstore this week, but the price was around Rs. 900! I'm waiting for the price to come down. (Of course, I did splurge on Jesus Of Nazareth which cost around the same, but that was a special case. PhuturePriest
I love J.R.R. Tolkien. He's such a razzle dazzle guy. Plus, he was knighted if I remember correctly! The coolest thing about him is how Catholic his books are. Father Robert Barron always mentions him and The Lord of the Rings, and you learn so many razzle dazzle Catholic aspects about the books. I know he isn't very popular on here, but Michael Voris has a wonderful video on Frodo and some of the Catholic aspects about him. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=32o3jbSnN6w&list=FLUGGv5nc6UFvmWHUWaeQDwA&index=7&feature=plpp_video I know it says "The Hobbit" but it is actually about Frodo.
