Guillermo Del Toro Exits The Hobbit Movie

The Hobbit is not a very long book, so to make it into two movies will either require adding a lot of fluff or moving the story at a snails pace.

The more the complexities and the problems happen with the Hobbit movie, the more I am not so excited to see the train-wreck of a film that might result. From Peter Jackson not doing it, to him being involved (as a producer, not as a director), to threats from the Tolkien estate warning not to use material outside of The Hobbit (mostly, not to use The Silmarillion), and etc.

This must be how somebody plans to score two films out of one not-so-long storybook: with the Silmarillion tie-in.
There is not a great deal about hobbits in the Silmarillion, as the other books kind of do as much as you can do with hobbits and hobbit/Halfling society. So I suppose the connection is about the treasure trove.
Not just the all-important Ring, but the knives and swords and weapons, the magical treasures from the men of Westernesse/Numenor, whose Atlantis-like rise and fall is included in the Silmarillion chronicles (a lot about Sauron in there).
Gandalf is not even fleshed out that much in the Silmarillion although you do discover his roots, you discover how he began before he was a thousands-year-old mendicant kind of wandering wizard. From there, Gandalf wisely retreats to the background, which is one way to explain how he survives the Silmarillion in one piece -- by adapting, and keeping his head down.
I think the production people ought to humble themselves and accede to the Tolkien estate's wishes, just let the Silmarillion alone and let The Hobbit be The Hobbit already. And all those terrific dwarves (no, the Silmarillion doesn't much add to the dwarves' history either).

Here are some pics of the Hobbit homes. They are sitting there, waiting to be used in a film.

Fluff being extra long battle scenes...like Transformers 2. Maybe Megan Fox could even show up too, just for added screen-time and box-office appeal.

It's unfortunate about Del Toro, though; his Pan's Labrynth was an amazing film, and the two Hellboy films were good as well, so he seemed like a good choice to direct The Hobbit films. Of course, Apocalypse Now was a train-wreck of a film in the making, but it turned out to be one of the greatest war films ever made. So hopefully they'll still be able to come out with a good product.
