Does This Ever Happen To You?

My family has a knack for making an assumption about me based on one incident. Over stupid things. For example, once or twice when opening a bag of cookies I've pulled too hard and ripped the bag. Now every single time a snack bag is ripped like that, automatically I'm the culprit. I only did it once or twice, so I must do it every single time seems to be the philosophy. The same applies to the toilet paper. Apparently I never replaced it (I don't even remember WHEN this happened, that's how long ago it was) and every time the roll is empty, it's my fault. My parents also claim I'm very loud when I come through the door or when I go through the cabinets. Yes, I understand why a person would come to that conclusion when said person is half asleep or asleep on the couch - a mouse scurrying across the floor would sound loud when you are suddenly roused from sleep like that. They are really just teasing more than half the time, but it's just gotten REALLY annoying.

My family still thinks things about me that I haven't done in 40 years. It can be infuriating.

I have a theory (based on no scientific evidence that I know of) that humans have been designed so that, when it comes near the time for children to be moving out on their own, parents and children often start bugging each other (even if they love each other). Sometimes that doesn't happen, of course, but it seems to happen a lot. That makes it a little easier for both parents and children when it comes time for the child to move away.

This happens in the animal world, too. When I volunteered at the local zoo, we had a pair of vultures who were among the first in captivity to raise their baby. A baby vulture gets to be as large as his parents (that is--huge) pretty quickly. The baby vulture learned how to fly and how to eat on his own, but he preferred to stay in the nest because his parents fed him. Finally, about two months after the baby should have left the next, the two parent vultures got sick of this and literally kicked him out. (He wasn't hurt because he was able to fly, so he didn't fall.) The zoo curators moved the young vulture to another zoo where they had a young female vulture who needed a mate, so in the end, it worked out.

Note: I am NOT comparing you to a vulture! (Although, I have to say, the two vultures were wonderful parents, and the father did as much "parenting" as the mother. It's very touching to see these big, ugly birds being so good with their young.) It was mostly an excuse to tell my cute vulture story. Hang in there! And, CatherineM is right. Even after you have been living away from home for awhile, your family will still remind you of all the things you did when you were younger (even if you don't remember doing most of those things). And it STILL drives me crazy!

yeah...

mine is kinda the opposite tho. I was 16 and got a speeding ticket. I went to court, fought it, and won. From that time on i heard "OH MISTER SMOOTH TALKER!! YOU CAN'T TALK YOUR WAY OUT OF THIS!!!" I could not get 2 sentences out, and i hear this.

"Jason, why did you not get the 'xyz' from the store?"

"Mom, they did not have the kind of 'xyz' you wanted, but i know you really hate a certain brand of 'xyz', and....."

"OH MISTER SMOOTH TALKER!! YOU CAN'T TALK YOUR WAY OUT OF THIS!!!"

<_<

or

"Why were you late to 'xyz', I needed you there at that time!"

"Dad, I'm sorry... there was a bunch of traffic on the 91, so I got off the freeway and..."

"OH MISTER SMOOTH TALKER!! YOU CAN'T TALK YOUR WAY OUT OF THIS!!!"

lol

it is a long story.. my passengers just so happened to be trying out a camcorder-ish type video camera. I had proof that a semi sped past me at or about the moment the cop said he radar-ed me. the radar, at that time, would pick up the bigger object, not the smaller, necessarily. so he clocked the semi, and not me. that was my main argument.

that, and pointed questions about random facts that he got jumbled helped. he could not tell me where he was at when he clocked me. I asked him to show me on a map i drew out...afterwards, i showed the trees, bushes, and physical barriers; and he changed were he was. The trick was that he would say x, and i would ask how that was possible as there were caltrans equipment there, and then he would say 'y', then i would show him hjow that was impossible. (i went back and took pictures of everything right after i got the ticket. The judge said I should get into debate. I told him i was a much better smart alec. ;) he laughed. in the end, i think i got a little lucky too.

That is awesome! I'll bet that cop felt pretty stupid after that. Poor guy. He had it coming if he couldnt tell which vehicle he was clocking.

Funny that you forget something so integral to your story

how is that integral to the story?

In a court of law, it doesn't matter what my speed was..it only matters what speed can be proven.

I could have been going 62 or 102. The fact is the officer could not prove I was going over the posted speed limit.
