I really like my name because it's unusual and not often used, but if I could change my name to any name in the world, it would definitely be Elizabeth. My favorite mysteries are the Joyful Mysteries, most especially the Mystery of the Visitation. "Who am I that the mother of my Lord would come to me?" So humble, yet so beautiful at the same time. The meaning of the name Elizabeth is: God is my abundance
Thank-you for that reminder of St. Elizabeth's "story"--we know so little about her, but what we know is wonderful---as well as the meaning of the name Elizabeth--I hadn't known that. I think she was an amazing woman of faith to trust in God to bring her a son even though she was barren and advanced in age. The Canticle of Zechariah (Elizabeth's husband) is so beautiful. I've read it while praying the Liturgy of the Hours: Blessed be the Lord, The God of Israel; He has come to His people and set them free. He has raised up for us a mighty Saviour, Born of the house of His servant David. Through His holy prophets He promised of old That He would save us from our enemies, From the hands of all who hate us. He promised to show mercy to our fathers And to remember His holy Covenant. This was the oath He swore to our father Abraham: To set us free from the hands of our enemies, Free to worship Him without fear, Holy and righteous in His sight All the days of our life. You, My child shall be called The prophet of the Most High, For you will go before the Lord to prepare His way, To give his people knowledge of salvation By the forgiveness of their sins. In the tender compassion of our Lord The dawn from on high shall break upon us, to shine on those who dwell in darkness And the shadow of death, And to guide our feet into the way of peace. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning. is now, and will be forever. Amen.

I always wondered how St Therese (a French woman, mind you) kept her brows so nice. French woman are known to be somewhat hairy.
Therese and her sisters actually plucked their mustaches. It is included in one of the books about her deathbed conversations and the sisters talked about how one didn't have to have a mustache to be a Carmelite! Jacob wrestles with the angel and names that place "Bethel" because "Surely God (El) was in this place (Beth)". I don't know about the "za" syllable. I know several people who know Hebrew well enough that they'd be able to answer this off the top of their head. I will investigate.
Thanks to all of you for your research. I like ALL the meanings of the name. It makes me feel even better about the fact that, in my deepest heart, I am Elizabeth--although I am not really worthy to share the name with so many holy women who had that name. It turns out that my given name is actually that of two early Christian martyrs--definitely saints, but mostly unknown. Perhaps my given name fits me better than I realize. Since their martyrdom, the two saints are honored in certain places, but they mostly served God without drawing a lot of attention to themselves--then and now. That has always been an important value to me--to, whenever possible, try to do good in stealth. I know my parents didn't realize my name was a saint's name when they named and baptized me. And, I suspect that my now-atheist father would not be pleased to find out that my name is a saint's name. However, it gives me a secret smile, because I found that my father's name is also that of a saint, and I pray to that saint regularly whenever I have difficulties in my relationship with my father. One random factoid: Although in my 20's I didn't really realize that, deep inside, my name is really Elizabeth, the Catholic church where I was married was St. Elizabeth's--in this case, named after St. Elizabeth of Hungary.
Random addition to the post above: In chat last evening, I asked if May 15 had any special signifcance--I thought I'd read something recently that was special about May 15. May 15 is normally known as the feast day of St. Isidore the farmer, but I checked today, and it is also the feast day of one of the saints who has my given name. Whew! I thought I was going nuts. (Well, I may be going nuts--but not in this case.)

However, "aliz" [masculine] or "aliza" [feminine] is an adjective meaning "happy" or "joyful". "Bet" is "house", as in "Bet-lechem", "House of Bread". "Bet El" literally is "House of God". So I presume that Elizabeth can be translated as "House of Joy". [I am a Hebrew speaker, btw] Edited September 20, 2010 by Antigonos
