just quit watching TV, then, if it is so irritating.

i doubt you will miss it

LOL! I just got a nasty message that Comcast has cut off my television service because the bill hasn't been paid. (I THOUGHT I had set up automatic direct payment. Whoops!)

However, since I haven't turned on the TV in four or five months, I didn't even notice that my cable service had been cut off. Now I'm debating whether to have the Comcast turned back on, with just the most basic service. (It's the only way I'm going to get TV, because the area I live in doesn't receive signals.) I won't miss it 99% of the time, but there might be that 1%....

Brother Adam

We do watch Hulu right now, but the commercials on that are starting to turn sour. Everyone can live a full life (and dare I say much better life) without tv. I have been thinking about getting rid of it all for about a year now and the feelings aren't going away...

Nihil Obstat

I only ever watch a couple tv shows, and everything is online these days anyway.

I hardly ever watch TV (if I do, it's usually on hulu.com), but it is annoying when condom commercials come on the radio.

Showing that even atheists can do the right thing sometimes, my sister and brother-in-law have never owned a TV. (One exception--They are all big baseball fans, so they WOULD borrow a TV during the World Series.) It wasn't a big moral issue, and the kids were not forbidden from watching TV at friends' homes, but my sister and BIL said that they never had a TV before having children, so why buy one when they had kids?

Keeping in mind that I am a devoted aunt, I can see a HUGE difference between my niece and nephew compared to kids of co-workers, etc who are the same age. As I watched them grow up, compared to their peers, my niece and nephew were much better able to amuse themselves, both are big readers (actually the whole family is, and books have been a big part of their life), and most obviously, to me, they are the least materialistic kids I have ever met. They weren't into all the big fads, and when I would ask them what they wanted for Christmas, they genuinely wanted books (or sports equipment). Socioeconomically their home is very close to what my neighborhood is like, so money is not the difference. And, obviously, religion is not the difference. It's clear to me that not being raised with TV is the difference. (My sister would say that the difference is due to their participation in team sports, which, I agree, has helped them both, but I think no TV is a bigger influence.)

It was a lot harder to raise kids without TV, especially when they were little. When a mom is tired, putting a Mary Poppins video on or the Sat morning cartoons is much easier. Instead, the kids helped their parents cook. (Both my sister and BIL are great cooks.) And, now that they are college-age, my niece and nephew are not particularly interested in TV (except sports).

So, if you and your wife could do it, your kids are still young enough that no TV could make a big difference.

BTW--Lots of people worried that the other kids would think my niece and nephew were weird for not having TV. I guess this could be an issue in some places, but in Berkeley, they weren't the only kids without TV in their house.

Sorry if this seems like giving parenting advice. I've never been a parent, so I try to refrain from that. I'm just passing along a success story of two kids who turned out great, in large part, I believe, because of no TV.

However, I will confess that maybe the larger part (more than TV) is that my sister and BIL REALLY love their kids. There is no question that in that family, the kids' needs come first. So, both my niece and nephew are very self-confident. Both my sister and BIL can have tempers, but the kids know they are loved underneath it--and, also, my sister and BIL have never laid a hand on either child, they don't believe in corporal punishment. If I told you the kids' grades and their achievements in sports, I'd sound like a bragging aunt, so I'll refrain. But, even better than being smart, both kids are truly nice and thoughtful. My sister confided to me once that she can't figure out how her kids turned out so nice, because she and I (or my brother) certainly weren't when we were teenagers.

Back in the cold war days, there used to be a saying, "Even Russians love their children, too." So, I guess you can say the same (at least about some) atheists. I don't know where their love for their kids is coming from, but it's there.

At least the ED commercials show married couples. The BC commercials I find funny because the first half they talk about how great their pill is, and the second half they list all the horrible things that can happen to you if you do take it.

Reminds me how every anti-depressant drug commercial I've seen lists "thoughts of suicide" as a side effect.

Church Fathers Know Best

I have to admit ... in addition to being a C.D. (Catholic Dork, as my wife lovingly calls me. Ironically, she as big of a C.D. as I am) I am a big sports fan. And i often will listen to sports talk radio; unfortunately the commercials (and sometimes the show content itself) are for strip clubs, internet sites on how to cheat on your wife, and how your genitals are the most important part of your body. It has recently reached a point of disgust for me. I wish I had the money to buy commercial time and put on ads for T.O.B. !!! I usually end up shouting at the radio, ". . . get out of my sight you satan!" then change the station! The culture of excess is a dying culture -- I just wish it would die already!

Better yet is when there is a yaz commerical on, followed by a commercial for the lawsuit against yaz. You get to hear about all the horrible things twice. It's actually pretty humerous, and you have to wonder who decided to play those two commercials together.

We get 2 channels on our atenna (of the 5-6 we "should" get). Honestly, of the channels we don't get, I miss PBS the most, because of the kids programming on in the afternoon, when I'm home from school and waiting for my hubby to come home from work. Other than that, everything we care to see is on the internet or we buy on DVD (even the stuff we want to watch on the 2 channels we get, we usually watch on line, because it's not on at a convinient time for us). Totally not worth paying money for cable! Not when we HAVE to have internet (we're both in school, and the hubby takes classes online).

We didn't have cable for 4 years because we were putting all our extra money into the mortgage. We only got 2 channels too. I did miss PBS, and am enjoying catching up on stuff. I didn't miss the commercials though.

I've gotten to the point that I change the channel when any birth control commercials come on.

Especially the stupid Mirena commercial. That one makes kids appear to be a burden instead of a blessing. :annoyed:

I also hate ED and Viagra/Cialis commercials. There always on, no matter what time. If you're someone who "needs" those products, do you really need the advertisement?

That one with the guy smiling is so freaky. I seriously think that man needs help.

When I was in seminary, there were 4 tvs for 120 guys. Consequently, I watched about 4 hours of television the whole time I was in college that year. When I went home for Christmas, I was shocked to find I had an aversion to television. I couldn't even bring myself to watch Everybody Loves Raymond because I was wasting a half hour of my life watching people bicker. I've slowly gotten used to watching tv again, but I admit my distaste is growing again. There's a scene in Fireproof where the main character takes a baseball bat computer because it brought so much trash (porn, in his case) into his heart. I've considered doing that to my tv. It's all just garbage.

I gave up on T.V. a while ago. Havn't watched a anything on the T.V. in two years.

Do I miss it no.....and this is another reason why I am glad I don't watch it.

I have my TV on alot, but never watch anything. I think I'd be better served with a radio.

I do find it funny when you see new birth control ads and then a couple months later you see lawyer ads asking if you used the product and had some bad effects.
