Laudate_Dominum
I was reading about supermax prisons and apparently they try to make it impossible to commit suicide. Like, you will endure this dehumanizing hell and we control you so much that you cannot even kill yourself to escape this sentence. If you refuse to eat you will be strapped into a restraint chair and fed by force, usually by inserting a feeding tube. That guy who tried to get on a plane with explosives in his shoes had this happen for example. Apparently the light and weird television thing are privileges that can be lost if you're naughty. The idea is total solitary confinement, no contact with other prisoners or the outside world, sensory deprivation, etc. Also learned that Woody Harrelson's (the actor) father died in a supermax prison and while back and that he was a notorious hitman who was convicted of killing a federal judge and confessed to have been part of the JFK assassination. Also learned that that FBI guy who had been spying for the Russians for more than twenty years, who is now in supermax, was a member of Opus Dei and that he went to confession regularly, as well as daily Mass, but also was a pervert who taped sex with his wife for friends to view and let people watch them having sex through the window. What a crazy world this is...

Although I think it's a good thing they make suicide near impossible. The conditions may be inhuman and evil, but suicide is still worse.
IgnatiusofLoyola
A prisoner could "commit suicide" in a back-handed way, the way Timothy McVeigh did. (He was in a SuperMax prison for a number of years.) Eventually he told his lawyers to stop the appeal process, and allowed himself to be executed. CatherineM
They keep them from committing suicide because when one does, their family sues.
I guess the toilet and things are specially designed to make such things impossible. Plus, in supermax, there is not a second of your life when you are not under surveillance so whatever thing you tried would have to be a swift and thorough death. Apparently four people have successfully committed suicide in supermax. I wonder what they did exactly.
