CatherineM
Here's the statue that used to sit in front of our old seminary, and is currently being restored to sit in front of the new one. The finger used to point straight up, but has been missing for awhile. The rumor is it got broken off because someone thought it was flipping people off. Thomist-in-Training
I'm super cereal about this st.Vincent Ferrer thing; I don't think this is a statue of Aquinas.
Hilde you are a genius. I thought about it, "St Vincent Ferrer, Angel of the Apocalypse, right?" google it, Google says yes, flip to Google Images, they give me 2 St Vincent Ferrers with wings. Nihil Obstat
On Oct. 3, 1408, he was preaching one day in Salamanca on a hill called the Mount of Olives. He was assuring his hearers that the Day of Judgement was near and he proclaimed himself the Messenger or "Angel" of the Judgement spoken of in the Apocalypse. Several of the listeners began to scoff at him. During the sermon, a funeral procession passed by and Vincent called upon the dead woman to testify to the truth of this statement: He said: "Dead woman, arise and tell these people whether or no I am the Messenger of the Apocalypse sent to preach the advent of the Last Day." The woman rose in her coffin, sat up and answered: "Yes, Father, you are the Messenger." And immediately the body fell back again rigid and lifeless. The veracity of this event is testified to by numerous witnesses, again, who testified at his canonization proceedings. Obviously, we can understand the Day of Judgement being "near" not necessarily to literally mean that St. Vincent was predicting the eschaton within his lifetime.
That was my first thought, too. But, I didn't want to post that because I thought I'd be the only one whose mind works that way. Thanks, Hilde and Thomist-in-Training!!! When I went googling for the statue, (with "St. Thomas Aquinas" as one of the search words) that picture I posted came up -- it was the only one like that. Soooo, this is most excellent to know that it was most likely not Thomas, but Vincent! Very cool! However, the one I saw in the Philippines looked pretty much just like the one I posted -- with the red book instead of the trumpet, and without the cool gold banner and flame above the head. Well, except the hand definitely did not look like "the finger" -- it looked like Vincent's hand.
