Gifts And Fruits For Pentecost!

I mentioned the custom my monastery had for the feast of Pentecost in Luigi's thread, and someone suggested I start a thread and do something like that for anyone on PM who is interested.

So this is how it will work, since, obviously, I can't hand you a basket and have you draw your own! Let me know if you want me to draw a gift of the Holy Spirit and a fruit of the Holy Spirit, and I will after praying the Veni Creator for you, and I'll post it or pm you with it.

You can let me know here if you want, or you can PM... sorry I started it so late in the day... but Pentecost is an octave so it's not too late!

I'm trying to find a good explanation of the different gifts and fruits online for you guys... There's a good explanation of each of the gifts in the book of Mother Angelica's Life Lessons and Everyday Spirituality, if you have that, but I'm having trouble finding it online. The friars preach alot about them too, so I may be able to find a homily that talks about it.

Anyway, the gifts are listed in the book of Isaiah 11.2-3 "And the spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him: the spirit of wisdom, and of understanding, the spirit of counsel, and of fortitude, the spirit of knowledge, and of piety. And he shall be filled with the spirit of the fear of the Lord ...”

There are 12 fruits of the Holy Spirit, which St. Paul lists in the Letter to the Galatians 5.22-23 "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such there is no law."

Could you do it for me? The Holy Spirit has been working on me lately and I'd like to see what I'd get. Thanks!

Zunshynn, could you elaborate a bit more for me? What should one do after drawing the slips? I am very curious if this is a passive or active kind of devotion. I think this could be a great thing for our youth group.

Well, many people do think of it as something that they "have to work on" for the year, and certainly there is a certain element of necessary cooperation with the Holy Spirit in order to, but it is important to remember that it is a "gift" of the Holy Spirit. You don't grow in the gifts of the Holy Spirit because you did something to get it, but because He gives you that gift. Obviously the Holy Spirit is always working on us to grow in ALL of His gifts and fruits. What you draw is just something that perhaps He will be trying to increase in you particularly over the year. One thing that's nice about it is you think about that particular thing more, and in my experience, will notice the opportunities that arise in your life to bear that fruit, etc. For example... when we did this when I was a postulant, I got the gift of fear of the Lord, and the fruit of gentleness, if I remember correctly... and throughout the year, I could see ways in which I could practice gentleness more clearly, and also could cooperate with the Lord trying to increase a deeper, filial reverence in me. So it's a combination of active and passive... It's important to recognize that it is the Holy Spirit that does it, but to also recognize that He needs us to cooperate!

It probably would be cool to do with a youth group. In the monastery the sister would make them on nice card paper on the computer, and include the date, so that we could keep them throughout the year if we wanted to. I kept it on the frame of my cell door so I saw it every day as I was coming in and out of my cell. You may like to do something like that for them. (I just wrote them out on little torn pieces of paper. I may make one for myself though.)

I made this for my blog last year, which is kind of what I'm talking about, except you would want separate slips for the fruits and the gifts, and would draw them separately.
