MissScripture
So, with the stuff going on with my heart, James was very adamant that I get a pet, so that I don't die without ever having a pet. Then, my sister-in-law was looking for a new home for their one fish that just won't die (the rest of the school died over a year ago, despite their best efforts, this fish will NOT die, and they feel bad about just flushing it, especially since it's lived through so much already! lol). They're thinking the poor fish will be even more neglected once their baby is born, so they wanted to get rid of it somehow. So, between the two of them, I've ended up with a fish tank in my living room. We bought it last night (my birthday present to myself, I guess...) and I put it all up, but after reading through things, now I'm wondering if I need an air pump for it, too. I have a fiddler, and that seems to put some bubbles into the water, but I don't know if it will be enough. Currently, I have no fish, yet, but my fishie refugee will be a tetra, and I'm thinking of getting a few more tetras (they like schools), and a few other fish. Oh, the tank is 14 gallons, and there will be some live plants, but they haven't started to grow yet. Also, does anyone know if it will be okay to turn off the fiddler over night when I do get fish? The tank is in our living room and if people visit us, that's where they sleep, and while it's not loud, it can be kind of obnoxious (and it would make me have to go to the bathroom, if I were to sleep out here, so I don't want to do that to any guests). Sternhauser
Get an air pump with an airstone, and leave the fіlter on. What kind of fіlter do you have? If it is the kind that uses air to draw water through it, you won't need to get a separate air pump for a tank that size. Be sure to let this fish acclimate to the tank for a couple weeks. The newly established tank needs to go through a bacteria cycle before getting more fish, which should not be added all at once. ~Sternhauser Edited May 23, 2010 by Sternhauser
Winchester
I know that putting fish in a tank is an act of aggression.

[/quote] Winchester, fishes could not possibly feed themselves, house themselves or interact peacefully without our wise intervention. We need to govern their actions by putting them in aquariums. For their own good. ~Sternhauser Edited May 23, 2010 by Sternhauser

I was under the impression the refugee was already in a newly set-up tank. You can definitely get a couple fish to start creating biological goodness to start the tank cycle. Make sure you size them right, ensure inter-species temperament compatibility, and take the species' temperature requirements into account. I just wanted to be prepared for it, plus my husband was adamant about me getting a fish tank, so I could have a pet, and he is anything but patient. lol. JustJump
that's the same fiddler we had for our 10 gallon tank. We had tetras too! The one's that have stripes that glow are way cool to watch at night. Um I wouldn't get live pants, they're too much work to move when you clean in my opinion. And I wouldn't put any pump in that churns up bubbles...it'll also churn up fish poo and gross stuff. Tanks get dirty fast, you'd be surprised! You'll want to get a suction pump for when you clean the tank, it's basically just a plastic tube...makes it easier to get all the gunk out. Oh and don't use soap to clean any of the stuff...or put any sea shells or anything from a lake/ocean/etc. in the tank. You can totally turn the fiddler off for a night or two, we did a bunch and our tetras lasted forever...literally like years! Um...and remember fish are friends, not food!
