I just love when it's time to change breviaries. Eastertide season ends tonight and tomorrow is the start of Volume III for the Divine Office (UK version).

In Australia we have a solemnity tomorrow for Mary, Help of Christians and although the Ordo says to use Vol 2 pg 197* - for those who want to make the change tonight, we can use Vol 3 pg 426* instead.

It will be week 8 in ordinary time this week and Psalter week 4. Enjoy!

(Can you tell I love changing breviaries and marking them up? )

Only fairly recently have I discovered the fabulousness of the UK breviary.

I love the layout, and I particularly love the little marks above the words -- I don't know the "official" name, but I thought it was WONDERFUL! (How convenient for chanting the liturgy!)

:clapping:

However, I must admit... I do prefer the translation of some of the psalms and readings in the US version over the UK version.

I'm looking forward to seeing the overhaul of the Liturgy of the Hours now that the GIRM is soon to be debuting. :woot:

Me too Laetitia! Only I fear that the changes will be minor...some of the collect prayers and antiphons maybe, but the translations of the texts probably won't change, since the USCCB has us in the stranglehold of the NAB. :(

I am seriously thinking about using the traditional Baronius breviary when it comes out. It is very similar to their Little Office of the BVM, which I adore. And it will have the Latin side by side. :)

In all the Carmels I have been in, we have used the UK breviary and I was trained on that one, so it is my favorite. I have used the 4 volume US LOH as well, with the Hermits of Bethlehem and with Ros' community in St Louis, so I know it, but I guess I will always have the UK one in my heart, and I actually prefer those translations as well, especially the Sunday Psalms that are used for Feasts and Solemnities (and most especially the canticle of Daniel (Dan 3:57-88,56) because it is so nice to chant it. The US breviary is designed for reciting rather than chanting.

If you want to learn more about the UK Divine Office, Volume 1 has a lot of information at the front about the liturgy. We had to study that every day in the Noviciate.

I love the Baronius too, and wish that all Carmels would use the Latin again (and most especially the old Carmelite Rite) but at least I love the UK breviary so that's ok. I love to hear the Office chanted in Latin.

It will be interesting to see what changes do come in for the English version though.
