fides quarens intellectum
Illinois School Nixes Basketball Team's Trip to Arizona Over Immigration Law FOXNews.com An Illinois high school says it's denying its girls' basketball team the opportunity to play in an Arizona basketball tournament over the Grand Canyon State’s new immigration law. Parents in Illinois are outraged over a move by a local high school to scrap its girls basketball team's trip to Arizona over the Grand Canyon State’s new immigration law. The Highland Park High School varsity basketball team has been selling cookies for months to raise money for a tournament in Arizona. Now, after winning their first conference title in 26 years, the girls are being denied the opportunity to play in the tournament due to uncertainty over how a new Arizona law that makes it a crime to be in the country illegally will be enforced -- and because the trip “would not be aligned” with the school's “beliefs and values,” Assistant Superintendent Suzan Hebson told the Chicago Tribune. Parents said there was no vote or consultation regarding the decision, which they called confusing, especially since they say no players on the team are illegal immigrants. “I’m not sure whose values and what values and what beliefs they’re talking about, we were just going to Arizona to play basketball and our daughters were very disappointed to find out the trip had been canceled,” Michael Evans, a father of one of the players told Fox News. Semper Catholic
Good for them, also looks like a number of Major League Baseball players will be boycotting the 2011 All-Star game due to this law.

IgnatiusofLoyola
The high school mentioned in the article is about 10 miles north of me. Knowing the demographics of Highland Park, I sincerely doubt that there are any illegal immigrants on that team. In fact, I was surprised to see two black girls on the team--I would have expected it to be all white. Highland Park is VERY affluent, so my guess is that the black team members may very well be relatives of Chicago Bulls players, because the Chicago bulls practice arena is very close by, and lots of the players live in that area. Michael Jordan still lives in the area and his boys would have gone to Highland Park High if he hadn't decided to send them to private school for privacy reasons. I chuckled when I saw that the girls had sold cookies to pay for the trip. My guess is that the girls on the team spent more on shoes last year than what the trip would have cost--it's that kind of town. But, it IS a very bleeding heart liberal kind of place. It prided itself on its liberal attitudes until Juanita Jordan (Michael's wife) led a group that finally led the police to admit that they had been engaging in racial profiling. If there are any illegal aliens in Highland Park, they are likely the maids and gardeners of the residents--not the students on the basketball team. This is just dumb, and robs the girls of a once-in-lifetime chance.

zunshynn
wow that's really silly. Is this a private school? I don't see how a public school could get away with this.

In the area I live in, our public schools are excellent, so even rich people usually don't send their kids to private school, unless it's for religious reasons. Everyone wants to take the trip, but some bureaucrat knucklehead makes the decision for everyone. Maybe this superintendent should get together with the high school teacher that called for a revolution in America by Hispanics. I love this part...
Evans said he also failed to understand why the school allowed so many other trips, but not this one. “The school has sent children to China, they’ve sent children to South America, they’ve sent children to the Czech Republic, but somehow Arizona is more unsafe for them than those places,” he said.

So it's okay for an official of a public school to dictate what laws people can/cannot support, but a bishop can't encourage the members of it's diocese to vote according to Church teaching. Makes sense to me. Not.
I expect that, with this publicity, the school will back off and let the team go to Arizona. I wouldn't be surprised if the town of Highland Park has more lawyers per square mile than almost any suburb in the U.S., so I'm sure the school has been threatened with at least one lawsuit already, maybe more than one. I'm sure I'm exaggerating about the number of lawyers in Highland Park, but not by much. I just tried to think of everyone I know in Highland Park. I could think of eight people, and three of them are lawyers. LOL Edited May 13, 2010 by IgnatiusofLoyola
