I had to chuckle, though, because that picture looks like they told her to go stand in the middle of the flower bed. I hope the gardener didn't mind! krissylou
It looks like a beautiful community with very happy Sisters and God bless them. But I just *have* to say that I don't think I would last for half an hour after investiture before pulling that ... THING ... off from around my neck. The world's shortest novitiate!
Krissylou--I agree. Someone once called wimples one of the most flattering pieces of clothing ever designed for a woman, and many wimples are very flattering. You may not see it now, but, as you get older, a wimple hides virtually every sign of aging. I have no idea if wimples are uncomfortable or not. I suspect some are and some aren't, and the ones that are uncomfortable are likely seen as a form of penance, as well as tradition. However, I would feel like I was being strangled--just like some men feel strangled by neckties. Don't worry, in the PPC the Oblates won't wear wimples. And, I suspect that many of not all the Sisters/nuns won't wear wimples, either. As well as possibly being uncomfortable, they look hard to keep clean, and as if they would require a lot of ironing, etc. If you suddenly find yourself called to be a contemplative Dominican, the Summit NJ Dominicans (among others) don't wear wimples (or cape sleeves). God would have to give me a LOT of grace to wear a simple like that.
