CatherineM
Chernobyl? I mean it's like when we really screw stuff up, just encase it in concrete, and hope for the best. The female Coast Guard Admiral who was talking about it on our news here said that they haven't done anything like this before at these depths. mommas_boy
Myself, I don't think that it will "fix" the problem. But, I do have hopes that it will at least slow it from getting much worse.

Luigi
My father, the engineer, loves concrete more than he loves me - for one thing it's more predictable. But it really is amazing stuff, and I hope to high heaven that it works its magic in the Gulf! St. Concretius of Gravel, Sand, and Lime, pray for us! Brother Adam
Notice how they are not trying to stop the leak by closing the line, but instead capture the oil to ship it, process it, and sell it.
CatherineM
I'm not sure why, but I always had the idea that those off shore wells basically went all the way to the bottom, but I guess they just float on top of the water like a ship, and just the pipe goes deep. I guess I'm surprised that more of this doesn't happen. I've lived next to salt water, and it will eventually eat through practically everything. Makes me wonder as these platforms age, if more of this kind of thing isn't going to happen.

Luigi
Apparently it didn't work. The leak is still putting out - what, 2,500? - barrels of oil a day. To me, it's a first class miracle that (only a little bit of) oil is only now starting to reach the shoreline - the well has been leaking for two weeks, at least, hasn't it? Last I heard, the oil slick was the size of Rhode Island - where's it all going?
Jesus_lol
this would be a good occasion to seriously look into alternate fuel and energy sources. strangely the "drill baby drill" folks are being remarkably absent...

[/quote] except that they are incredibly labour intensive and very polluting and devastating to the environment, even in comparison to other oil sources, in retrieval and refining. as a canadian(and one who might end up being employed up there) i hate to say it, but the alberta oil sands are kind of a black cloud hanging over canada's environmental record.
