MithLuin
The Missionaries of the Eucharist are a lay group of young adults who 'Proclaim the Beauty of the Catholic Faith' in New England each summer. They walk from Maine to Washington, DC as a visible witness to our faith, carrying a processional crucifix and the Vatican flag along the side of the road. The group seeks to witness to the people they encounter in their walk, to encourage Catholics living in areas where the faith isn't often supported, and strengthen their own faith through an intense prayer life and pilgrimage. Daily mass and liturgy of the hours are essential to the life of the Missionaries, as is a willingness to get up early, walk long hours, and eat whatever food is donated to the group. The group relies on the hospitality and support of parishes and families along their route. This summer, the Walk will begin on May 28th and end on August 7th. The first week is a week of training in Latrobe, PA to prepare the group for the communal life and mission of the summer. Ideally, walkers will be available for the entire walk, but if other obligations intrude, exceptions can be made. Missionaries are nothing if not flexible! So, what do you do (other than walk a lot?) You sleep in parish centers, rectories or family homes. Morning prayer, mass and breakfast, then pack up the vans and you're off for a day of walking! The group will cover ~25 miles each day in 3 mile shifts that last one hour each. On your shift, you'll pray a rosary or divine mercy chaplet, enjoy the beauty of Vermont in the summer, and stop and talk to people you meet. On your off shifts, you'll rest in the van or at a stop along the way, enjoy some quiet time/personal space, or chat with the other Missionaries. In the evenings, you may enjoy the hospitality of your hosts, have evening prayer and dinner, and night prayer before turning in. Then the next day, you pack up and do it again, working your way down the road throughout New England. Saturdays are lighter days, so fewer shifts, with prayer at abortion mills in the morning. Sundays are a day of rest - your feet will need it! I did this last summer and would be happy to field any questions you may have. It's an awesome group of people who have a really deep and sincere interest in living the Catholic faith. It's also an amazing opportunity to encounter people from all walks of life and to rely on God's Providence for your needs. I'm sure anyone who takes the risk of doing this for the summer will be blessed abundantly by the experience. I'd recommend it to college students, seminarians, those discerning marriage or religious life, folks between jobs, or anyone who feels called to give of themselves this summer in this way. So, anyone interested in taking a walk this summer? Laudate_Dominum
That does sound awesome! Only problem is that I consider t-shirts to be underwear so I don't think I could do the outfit. Maybe I could get a toga with the logo printed on it.

MithLuin
There are also sweatshirts with the logo, so if you're fine with wearing a hoody in the summertime, you can wear that instead. Every walker gets 2 t-shirts and one hoody, and may wear whichever they want, as long as they are 'in uniform' while walking.
The man in your avatar is wearing UNDERWEAR with his murse?! Scandal! I would love to do something like this someday, but I can't really afford not to work this summer, plus I have a handful of other things I've already committed to doing. Hopefully some day I'll be able to.
MithLuin
Oh, and of course you can wear another shirt under the t-shirt, as long as the t-shirt is the outermost layer.
Rebecca2009
That is so cool!! God bless all involved! I hope I see them somewhere. I'd love to give them a big bag of McDonald's or something.
MithLuin
I'm sure they would welcome that! Send me a PM with your location, if you wish, and I'll do my best to figure out when they'll be near your neck of the woods.
MithLuin
Oh, and I'd like to add that the Missionaries are in need of a van for the summer, so if you know of anyone who would like to lend or donate one to them, please contact me or them. Thanks! (Prayer support is always needed and welcome.) See the guy holding the crucifix in the opening post? He's a seminarian for the diocese of Providence, and will be co-leading the walk this summer . Edited May 14, 2010 by MithLuin
Oliver
That is quality, like a crusade.
MithLuin
It is - it's awesome! It's like going on a very public pilgrimage, and witnessing to your faith the whole way. When you enter a new state, the Missionaries use the flag to claim that state for the Vatican . A spiritual Crusade only, of course - our weapons are the rosary. But yes, if you know anyone who has a van they'd like to lend/donate, please let me know!
MithLuin
Quick update: The walk is underway! After a week of training, the Missionaries headed up to Maine and began walking. Training week included time with the Benedictines in Latrobe, as well as a talk from the Theology of the Body Institute and a visit to Msgr. Reilly in NYC to learn about sidewalk counseling and praying in front of abortion clinics. The Walk begins in Lewiston, Maine at the Basilica of Sts. Peter and Paul, and during that first week, the Missionaries travel through Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont. Over this weekend, they ventured north to Montreal, to visit the shrine of St. Joseph. They'll continue through the beautiful state of Vermont towards Albany, NY.
