Luigi
http://elmiradominicans.blogspot.com/ Three Dominican established a new monastery in Delaware just a couple of years ago. The new house is sponsored by the Monastery of Mary, Queen in Elmira, NY. The new community received its first vocation on the feast of St. Catherine of Siena. Let us pray. (The information is in a scrolled blog; if you're checking this link after today (05-07-10), you may have to scroll down to find the information.) DameAgnes
I don't get it. She just entered and she's already in the habit?
laetitia crucis
I was wondering the same thing. Maybe that's their version of the postulant habit? Her veil does look a bit different --- shorter, and no white band. Edit: Although she also received her religious name and title... Curious.
I think that when they write "The reception of the habit marks Amy's, now Sr. Amy of the Eucharist, O.P., formal entrance into that community," they mean that she was received as a novice. It is not uncommon for a community to speak of "receiving" novices, even though those novices have been living in the community for however long their postulancy is. But apparently she just "visited" the monastery over Lent. Perhaps they do not have a postulancy? For that matter, she is not wearing the white veil of a novice. She's wearing the black veil of a professed nun. So, yeah, it's a headscratcher. But perhaps she is being habited for the Delaware house and their postulants wear that white turtleneck? I'm confused.
I wrote a long-ish reply to this, but on reading it back, it was far too full of "I think," "I don't know," and "I believe that," for it to be anything other than gossip and idle speculation from a position of profound ignorance, and so I deleted it. It seems to me that, from the blog post, she was received as a novice for the new community and merely visited Elmira over Lent (presumably because Elmira still has a responsibility for the new community until it becomes self-supporting). Anything other than that is mere conjecture on my part.
For what it's worth, I Googled "Amy Gracey" with Dominican, and she claims the following: She already spent twenty-nine years in a Dominican monastery as a cloistered nun, does not name the monastery. Health reasons required her to leave the enclosure. She went back to school (Mount Holyoke??). raises as many questions as it answers. Was she professed to some pre-existing Dominican cloistered community of nuns? If so, does she now "trans-filiate"?
DameAgnes
Ah, from a friend who knows: once a Dominican nun has been solemnly professed, even if she leaves for a while, then comes back, she is readmitted to the habit and does a year in novitiate, I guess to get back in to the sync of things and have a bit of supervision as she re-adjusts. So, not so mysterious, but it could have been written better. Yes,she is w/ the Benincasa house, not Elmira.
Luigi
I don't know anything about the significance of the color of her sweater, or whether her veil has a white band around it, or how long she's been living in which community (other than what it said on the blog). I just posted the update so that people could thank God, pray for the new nun, and maybe look into this community if they're interested. Sorry I didn't have any more substantial information.
