Lil Red
+JMJ+
So, Larry King is getting his 8th divorce, and Elizabeth Taylor is possibly getting married for a 9th time. Britney Spears was married for 55 hours. Jesse James and Tiger Woods are, well... you know... Even Newt Gingrich is on his 3rd marriage. Yet the idea of same-sex marriage is what is going to destroy the i...nstit...ution of marriage? REALLY?!? Feel free to copy and paste if you agree!
Thy Geekdom Come
My counter-argument: Protestants like to say that homosexual marriage would destroy the institution. The problem is that it's really only half true. Homosexual marriage would destroy what's left of the institution, but contraception, pornography, and self-centeredness have done the damage we already see, and there are fewer Protestants willing to fight those evils. So yes, homosexual marriage would cause terrible damage, but don't let the fact that another evil has already destroyed it convince you that somehow homosexual marriage is good. If America had dropped another atomic bomb on Nagasaki, it would have destroyed it further, but just because it had already been mostly destroyed doesn't make it okay to enter the launch codes. Winchester
I just called it a straw man. Nobody know what it meant. It is a false argument, though. It implies that we approve of other imappropriate approaches to marriage. Edited May 6, 2010 by Winchester
laetitia crucis
Forgive me, but I wish I could answer those people with a punch in the face. I despise "chain" status updates, especially when they say such things like that one. Unfortunately, I see many friends statuses like that. They're all from my fellow music major friends, theatre major friends, and Honors program friends. *sigh* Though none of them are Catholic. Usually I just bite my tongue, wish I had something substantial and clever to respond with, and pray.
HisChildForever
As if those types of disastrous relationships only exist outside of the gay community?
Ephrem Augustine
The sad thing is that any response they would perceive as indicative of a systemic hatred or homophobia. Might wonder if people are saying those things are likewise willing to give themselves to a life time commitment of loving sacrifice to another... Nihil Obstat
I saw it too. Just didn't respond. Good to know the status isn't original. I definitely didn't think this person was clever enough to think it up on her own.

Maggyie
Comment on it with a statement like "I totally agree, the first thing we need to do is work to overturn no-fault divorce laws!!! Join the fight to protect marriage!!" And then post a link to one of the organizations working to get rid of no-fault divorce. That usually shuts them up.
