How To Stop Someone

if you notice that someone receives the Eucharist, but carries it away and is not putting the host in their mouth, how should you stop them? what would you say or do? (assuming that this person is a total stranger to you).

1) introduce yourself (now you are no longer strangers) ;)
2) ask if they are catholic
3) if yes, ask them to consume the host, now, in your presence.
4) if no, ask for the host back.
5) advise Father of situation when time permits.

so you should follow them back to their pew (assuming you are in your pew and have seen this)?

That is what I was instructed to do (and actually did once) when I was a EMOHC.

Yeah, that's probably the best thing to do.

MIkolbe is the one who knows what he has been instructed to do, but, personally, I would be uncomfortable following the person back to their pew for fear it would be disruptive to the service and call attention to the person.

My first instinct would be to call an usher (particularly if the person with the host is a large, young, male), or to wait until the service is over and then go over and talk to the person. However this has some serious downsides (particularly waiting until the service is over):

--The person could leave the church quickly.
--The person could deny having the host.
--The person has had a chance to hide the host.

So, some disruption is better than someone leaving the church with an unconsumed consecrated host. And, normally, communion is near the end of the service anyway, so you wouldn't have disrupted other worshippers during the consecration.

In the best case, this person simply wanted to bring a consecrated host home to a relative who couldn't come to Mass, and didn't know that the Church is happy to visit the homes, and distribute the Eucharist to those who cannot attend Mass. Maybe the person knew this, but his/her relative does not welcome visitors (not uncommon in elderly people).

But, the sad truth is that there are Satanists who use a consecrated host in their rituals. So, unfortunately, I would "cause a fuss" even if that was the last thing I wanted to do.

As much as I would dislike doing it, Mlkolbe's advice is probably best. (Why am I not surprised?)
