I bet it is.

Rather than waste your time betting it's far away, I'd be praying that it is far away.

There are already states that have basically outlawed homeschooling. Don't kid yourselves. It is so not an impossibility.

Man, things have changed so much during my lifetime. I went to first grade to a small public school (which is actually the same school system my daughter now attends) and I can remember that we were taught to recite Psalm 100 and Psalm 23 from memory. We recited them along with the Pledge of Allegiance every morning and at all school assemblies. I can remember very vividly my first grade math teacher saying, when questioned by one of the students about us not being able to pray in school, "We will stop saying the Psalms when they come in here with guns and make us." And this was in the very early 80s when prayer in schools was a VERY hot-button issue. :(

As a matter of fact, I still recite Psalm 100 at the Invitatory of the Office instead of Psalm 95 because I know it by heart.

Neither is Obama not having a US birth certificate, but I'm not holding my breath on that one either.

The Assembly of Catholic Bishops of Ontario and James Ryan, president of the Ontario English Catholic Teachers' Association were not immediately available for comment about the new curriculum.

Wow! That may be one of the benefits of attending a small school.

We didn't pray in public school because at least 1/3 to 1/2 of the students were Jewish and to pray Christian prayers would have been disrespectful--and I feel very good now that we showed that respect. However, reciting the Psalms is different than saying overtly Christian prayers.

But, sex education at age 6, even in a public school--No. Every child is different in what they want and need to know
at a particular age. When I was six, all I knew was that my little sister had come out of my mommy's tummy (my sister was born when I was 5, so it would have been hard to hide that my mother was pregnant). I remember being satisfied with only that basic level of information. But, if I hadn't had a new baby sister recently, I suspect I would not have been particularly curious about where babies come from--not at age 6. Unfortunately, I think the combination of TV and other children makes some children curious earlier nowadays. But, I think it is the PARENT who knows his/her child best and the right amount of information to give. I can't imagine that a set curriculum could possibly be what is right for every child--especially at that young age.

Where is their reasoning for this?

The kids have not even stepped into puberty yet at age 6....

As I wrote in my longer post, I do not support sex education in school for 6-year olds.

But, one thing I haved learned that surprised me (probably because I don't have children) is it's not unusual nowadays for a girl to start having periods as young as age 9, and some boys may start puberty almost that young, too. So, it may make sense, for some children at least, that the parents talk about sex earlier than they might have in the past.

Heck, when I was nine I didn't even know what menstruation was, much less sex. Odd, considering that otherwise I was a child who was curious about everything.

Nihil Obstat

Luckily the government so far has not removed the option for parents to opt out.
Personally, I've never seen or heard of a parent doing so, but the option at least is there.

If I have kids someday, I fully intend on opting them out of those classes, no matter what the curriculum is, if that curriculum has had anything to do with a government mandate (as they all do in Canada, to the best of my knowledge).

This is completely disgusting and embarrassing. Sex education should never be taught in a classroom, but at home, by parents.

I will consider that if/when it becomes relevant. Really, there are only two things that tie me to this city: first is my family and friends, and second is that I like the city itself. I really don't have a huge amount of nationalism in me, to be honest, so there's nothing stopping me from leaving Canada, besides what's stopping me from leaving Calgary.
