Resurrexi
I read that the Latin Catholics at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre were formerly bound by the terms of the status quo to use the Roman Liturgy as it was in 1852, the year the status quo was made. Unfortunately, in 1997, the agreement was revised, permitting the Latin Catholics to use the Novus Ordo instead of the ancient Roman Liturgy. [/quote] It's said that when the Patriarch goes into Christ's tomb with an unlit torch and prays there, fire descends from heaven to ignite it. He then passes the flame to an Armenian and a Greek prelate standing outside through a hole in the wall, and then they light the tapers of the faithful. God Conquers
Perhaps the pope could, being the patriarch of the west.
God Conquers
Also.... I REALLY want to know what those torches are and are made of... at the Way of the Cross at the Coliseum there were two huge ones being held beside the cross as it made its way around. The looked so awesome.

The different churches generally have their own ceremonies for the Holy Fire. I'm sure there have been Catholics that have gone/go to the Orthodox ceremony, but we have our own.
