Vincent Vega
Thanks for those directions from the Magisterium...I never knew that there was a prescribed method.

Ed Normile
At my current home parish it seemed to be a mixture of the first 12 people to walk into church, any age and sex, so as to get a "fair" representation of the parish. At my college parish I'm still a bit confused what they do, but yes, both men and women get feet washed.... At a former parish in another state, the priest had us all come up and wash our hands. Evidently people are either ignorant of the Vatican's directions or they prefer to ignore it thinking that they somehow know better.
A few years ago I was in Savanna Ga. and just made it back from a large blacktop job I was doing in time to make mass. Naturally I was very sweaty and dirty, but I was not about to miss mass, I washed my face and hands and put on a clean shirt and doused myself with Grey Flannel and figured I would set in the back or stand if the church was packed. As I walked in the guy in the back asked me if I wanted to join in and have my feet washed, I totally freaked out thinking I was not about to go up with feet that I had been walking in work boots since 6:00 am that morning and peel those shoes off and subject anybody to having to wash my feet. I politely said no and he said we need three others so please come up, I said I can not and he looked at me odd and walked away. Even if I had just that minute stepped out of a shower and had a pedicure forced upon me, a thing that you would have to kill me first before I would even consider, I would be way too embarrassed to have anyone wash my feet. I would not let my wife of 25 years wash my feet either, it just seems like an invasion of my personal privacy. I guess that maybe some would not understand this but that is how I feel, I bath alone, and even brush my teeth alone. The mass went on without my participation and the three ushers had to fill in, they had the usher pins on so I guess they could not get anyone else to have their feet washed. ed
Nihil Obstat
Oh, I said "You don't even want to know", but that was a mistake. I misread it as "you don't even know", which I do not. New pastor.

My wife and I once declined carrying up the gifts and the usher who asked us gave me a look like I was Satan himself.
CatherineM
Our old pastor washed whomever came up. He'd practically wash everyone. I did not participate. This is our first Easter with our new pastors so I'm not sure yet what's going to happen this year. I did hear one of the women being asked if she was going to be here to volunteer, but not by one of the priests, but rather by the woman who has kind of filled in as pastoral associate since our last one died and wasn't replaced. Frankly, it makes me so uncomfortable that it makes me want to not go on Thursday.
Thy Geekdom Come
12 adult men only should have their feet washed. Viri also implies adults. My current parish has men and women, but all adults, get their feet washed. My old parish had the priest wash the feet of men and women, then they'd go wash the feet of everyone else in the parish. I intentionally skipped Holy Thursday Mass the two years I worked there. I could have tolerated seeing it done, but as I worked there, my presence would have meant required participation, so I didn't go. Then again, my old pastor also thought it was appropriate for the Veneration of the Cross to "surf" a hollow cross across the congregation so they could all support it. It was like trying to mosh Christ crucified.

elizabeth09
I say that only Adults men becdause that what Christ had wash plus I think that the priest should wash the feet. Then for the last one is Wash the feet of 12 adult men for the 12 followers of Christ.
laetitia crucis
I voted you dont even want to know because at my parish the priest and deacon will wash the feet of the first six people to sit. Then everyone is encouraged to come forward, men, women, boys, and girls, and each person washes the feet of the next person in line after having theirs washed while the priest and deacon stand aside. I dont participate of course!
This happened at the first Holy Thursday Mass I ever attended. My reaction: After that priest was reassigned to a new parish, the new priest picked twelve "leaders" (men and women, young and old) of the parish to have their feet washed. I guess it was somewhat of an improvement, though I still didn't like it. I believe the parish I am currently at will wash the feet of twelve adult males. Marie-Therese
My parish is pretty reasonably traditional in most aspects, but it is very small. My pastor usually asks people to sign up to volunteer about 2 weeks before Holy Week so that he knows where he needs to fill in. We had 6 people washed at the service, both genders. My poor priest had 2 altar servers who looked as though they had never served Mass before, and they forgot half of what he needed. Father looked like he needed a stiff drink after the Mass was over. I did get to spend a lovely hour in Adoration, though, which was awesome.
MissyP89
My Newman Center is merging with the parish closest to the university, so we were asked to have a few college students participate in the washing. The group that went was entirely female, so two of us, one being myself, were chosen. So I went, and it was cool, and I won't do it again.
