DemonSlayer
What are some examples of "folk music" hymns?
Iacobus
Most of the music at my parish is organ (well it is programed to sound like an organ but it is a keyborad) and vocal. Though a few weeks ago they started to clap during the recessional hymn and I was like "what is going on here?" I am okay with the other stuff as long as it is Catholic safe, not overly loud or distrating, and there are Masses without the new music.
ChronoMasta
I love my parish. We have different music styles at different Masses. I love our praise and worship group (especially since I know most of the kids and my dad's in the group as well). I don't find anything wrong with drums and guitars at Mass, as long as they don't distract from the Mass itself.
Theologian in Training
Prolly the most interesting one I came across was the Willy Wonka theme.

follow_the_pelican
To be perfectly honest, Music should not be that big of a deal. We go to mass to praise and worship God. Not to compare or criticize the type of music played. In my opinion,as soon as the music draws attention to itself instead of what is taking place@that moment, it no longer has a place in the mass. you should not walk away from the mass thinking about the music, rather the awsomeness of the sacrafice on calvery. Well thats my spit on that beat.
Theologian in Training
The Oompa Loompa song? In Mass?
No, remember the music just as they are breaking through the glass ceiling and start floating over the city? I think there may be other times it is played as well. Regardless, that is the music. It is a refrain to a song that escapes me at the moment. I will look it up after Daytime Prayer. God Bless Alelluia!!! ryanmeyersmusic
it's a gary ault tune... it's not exactly the same as the willy wonka song but very similar... and it's the verse melody, not the chorus...

Theologian in Training
Actually, the organist told me it was from Willy Wonka, perhaps he was mistaken. God Bless Alelluia!!!
popestpiusx
Am I the only person who cringes, every time I go to mass? I consider it penance. Where have all the good songs gone? Why is the church somehow locked in this 60's-70's hippie type "folk music". I am sick of it. I want a "chior" not a happy, hippie coca-cola commercial. Where is the organ? aaargh.....
I'm right there with you on this one!!
Oik
I'd have to agree too dust. I actually recommend attending a Byzantine Divine Liturgy. Beautiful. There are no instruments allowed...ever, (with the exception of hand drums in the liturgy practiced in Africa) just chant style singing.
cmotherofpirl
I have never been to a Mass with a drum etc. We have an organ, keyboard that sounds like an orrgan, handbells, and occasionally flute, violin, or celtic harp. If a guitar is played, it must accompany the organ. Oh and I forgot the trumpets at Easter or Christmas. ryanmeyersmusic
Actually, the organist told me it was from Willy Wonka, perhaps he was mistaken. God Bless Alelluia!!!
Unless it was an instrumental piece, or a song about candy, it would have to have been a mistake... the verses to that song sound almost EXACTLY like the Willy Wonka theme song "...to a world of pure imagination..."
