electricdisk
Am I the only person who cringes, every time I go to mass? I consider it penance. Where have all the good songs gone? Why is the church somehow locked in this 60's-70's hippie type "folk music". I am sick of it. I want a "chior" not a happy, hippie coca-cola commercial. Where is the organ? aaargh..... dUSt
I agree. I yearn for a choir without electronic keyboards, guitars and drums. I say keep that stuff out of the mass. All "modern" music is for after mass. Get it? AFTERmass. Ha. I kill myself.
ilovechrist
our priest, who is a more traditional one, has agreed with our "folk" choir that they can play one Mass a month, but the organ has now been instituted full time besides that, and i'm now a sub for the lead organist (hey, my piano skills come in handy, its not that hard of a transfer)... ryanmeyersmusic
I agree. I yearn for a choir without electronic keyboards, guitars and drums. I say keep that stuff out of the mass. All "modern" music is for after mass. Get it? AFTERmass. Ha. I kill myself.
All forms of music were at one time modern. I think that parishes that are able should offer different styles of liturgical music to give people an opportunity to worship in an environment that draws them closer to the mystery of the Eucharist. I strongly disagree with some parishes that have got drums etc. at every celebration. I do believe that there is a place for "modern" music somewhere in a town on a given Sunday. It should follow a set of guidelines, though: It should be fairly easy to sing (ie rap is nearly impossible for some of us), It should be indoctrinated in Truth (singing some Baptist hymns would be OK, but others would contradict the teachings of the Church), The music should not interfere with the ability to pray the song (no screaming guitar solos, overcompensated rhythm sections, etc), etc.
my father-in-law would fall over about that comment! The organ is a lot different than a piano! Any organ folk might know of Dr. Jeff McLelland. He's one of the most respected organists in the country...

electricdisk
...should offer different styles of liturgical music to give people an opportunity to worship in an environment that draws them closer to the mystery of the Eucharist.
That is exactly what they don't do. The music selection is driven by the whims and fancies of the paid music director, not necessarily the parish. I am not trying to throw stones. I am just wondering if I am alone in my thoughts. Like I said. It must be penance, because I dislike "folk choir" music THAT much. I think it has something to do with being born in that time and having to grow up with it. Only to hear "come holy ghost, creator blessed" for the first time about 8-10 years ago. What a difference!!!!! You can hear it in the Christmas tunes also. How about "Oh come all ye faithful"? Now that is orchestration geared toward glorifying God. I hope souls are getting released from purgatory because I offer it up. Edited April 12, 2004 by electricdisk
ryanmeyersmusic
you should talk to your pastor and/or parish council about suggesting that different styles of music be offered at one or more of the celebrations on Sundays...
inDEED
...a choir without electronic keyboards, guitars and drums. These instruments really do a lot in engaging all sorts of Catholics... @ my parish, there are several types of Masses offered... Traditional (organ & choir), Contemporary (piano, organ), and Teen (Drums & the whole nine)... These instruments definitely have a place in our Masses... electricdisk
Welcome back inDEED! Feeling a little out of the loop since you gave up internet for lent? Maybe next year you can give up soda or meat instead of internet... besides, (IMHO) your participation **contributing** to the Catholic community, not distracting... Glad you are back.... dUSt
I'm not saying that they should be banished--I'm just wishing. I can't go to a mass at my parish without all that stuff. It'd be nice to have a mass with traditional music too. I wouldn't even want an organ. Just chanting. That'd be a dream.

Tony
They bring in the guitars in once in a while to our Mass but not often, the electric organ is there though. I Dont mind that too much, but during the Easter Mass, 1 of the choir members was encouraging the people addending the Mass to clap.. I was really annoyed by that
