Brother Adam
It is entirely impossible to take you seriously with your current avatar. Then to combine it with these beautiful pictures... Thankfully there are still beautiful Roman churches and beautiful liturgies. Edited March 28, 2010 by Brother Adam

It seems that the Russians tend to have more realism than traditional iconography. Perhaps this is a Western influence? I've been trying to come up with a good argument to convince Apo to change his avatar. In the lame forum, I tried to convince Apo that the blood in his avatar was making me faint. But, of course I was kidding (and he knew that) so no change. I have no influence over Apo, but maybe you do. Thank-you.
jeffpugh
I just saw an old lady with pussywillows getting off the bus a stop after I got on. I recall a Greek orthodox church near the EF parish I go to.
Apotheoun
I'm not a huge fan of some of the Russian painting styles. It seems that the Russians tend to have more realism than traditional iconography. Perhaps this is a Western influence?
Yes, the images are influenced by Western art forms. During the reigns of Peter the Great and Catherine the Great the Russian government tried to adopted a more Western approach in practically every aspect of the nation's life, civil and religious; and the original Christ the Savior Sobor, which was built after the Napoleonic Wars, was a continuation of the policy of those two imperial rulers. Now, as I indicated in another thread, Stalin ordered the destruction of Christ the Savior Cathedral in 1931, and so when the Russian Orthodox Church received permission to reconstruct Christ the Savior Sobor in the 1990s the Patriarch and the Holy Synod decided to build the new Church of Christ the Savior as an exact replica of the Church destroyed during the period of communist oppression, and that included the interior iconography, which is a mix of Byzantine and Western styles (often called Neo-Byzantine). Now, I am sure that there were many reasons why this course of action was taken, but no doubt one of the reasons was so that people could say that . . . mystically the resurrection of Christ the Savior Cathedral in Moscow (and the reconstruction of other historic Churches and monasteries throughout the nation) signifies the resurrection of Christianity in all of Russia, while also symbolizing the failure of the communists, who tried to kill the Church by making many millions of men and women into martyrs and passion bearers for Christ, and who went even beyond the horror of mass murder by trying to wipe out any evidence of the existence of Christianity in Russia by destroying and desecrating the holy temples that had been consecrated by the Orthodox Church to the worship of the Blessed Trinity. Thus, in a sense - at least from an Orthodox viewpoint - the communists made the Church buildings themselves into symbolic martyrs and passion bearers of Holy Orthodoxy, and because of that evil iconoclastic activity one could say that the rebuilding of these structures is a second Triumph of Orthodoxy over the enemies of Christ. Finally, as far as most new Churches are concerned, and more than 29,000 Churches have been built or restored since the fall of communism in 1991, those buildings are primarily being constructed according to traditional Byzantine Slav design, with iconography that follows the iconographic tradition of the Holy Fathers, instead of the Neo-Byzantine style evident in Christ the Savior Cathedral.
