In the Byzantine tradition Great and Holy Week begins today (Lazarus Saturday). Below are images from the Vigil Service commemorating Christ's entry into Jerusalem, which was celebrated at Christ the Savior Sobor in Moscow:

The only bowl I saw looked to be filled with willows (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pussy_willow). It is used in the slavic churches as an alternative to palm branches since those don't really grow in Russia : p.

God Conquers

People are holding them all over the place!

Although... probably more from tradition than anything.

Palms DO NOT grow in Canada either... but we definitely have them on Passion Sunday.

Sweet! Apo, are those considered icons adorning the church? I mean, they're definitely beautiful, no doubt about it, the style just seems so different from what I normally think of when I think of an icon, so it sort of threw me for a loop.

Apo can probably answer this better then I, but in the 18th and 19th centuries, Russian iconography was influenced by western art styles resulting in many "realistic" looking icons. The current trend in iconography is a Byzantine revival style. I don't know a whole lot on the subject though.

*Edit* Spelling errors...

Passion Sunday is two Sundays before Easter. Palms have no place in the Liturgy for Passion Sunday.

I believe that Passion Sunday and Palm Sunday were combined and are now celebrated together in the revised Roman Rite under the new name "Dominica in Palmis de Passione Domini."
