Laudate_Dominum
Anyone (I'm thinking Archaeology Cat in particular) ever studied ancient Egyptian language? Just curious. I've got some decent books on Middle Egyptian as I believe it would be the best base for studying Egyptian language in general. I'd like to explore the whole range up to the Coptic phase eventually. Just hoping someone around here is into this. Interested in advice, book recommendations, maybe website recommendations, et cetera. My goal is a very broad and general familiarity with the language and its history, not mastery. I'd like to be able to study Middle Kingdom texts in detail, but I don't aspire to become a real Egyptologist; I'm just an interested layman who loves ancient languages. Thanks. Archaeology cat
You'll want to get Faulkner's dictionary. You're right about Middle Egyptian being the best base. To learn the basics, Mark Collier's/Bill Manley's book is good. If I ever have time, I could scan in my instruction notes from my prof - he made his own curriculum for it. He's a language genius. And ancient languages rock. Nihil Obstat
I've got a photo of the Rosetta Stone if you want. I'm sure you could figure it out from that.
They didn't write vowels, so we just insert random "e"'s to make it pronounceable.
Cool.
