This is a most wonderful thread to start, CM! :book:

And providentially, I was just putting together my "Book Wish List" -- honest! I suppose you can imagine my thrill when I came to check out the VS after doing so. ;)

Just added some of these books to my list.

I will mention some addition books that I have read and found very useful in discernment:

Liguori's "True Spouse of Christ" was INTENSE! My spiritual director assigned it to me as a novice and all I could say while reading it was "Whoa. Who is this St. Mechtilde? And how on earth did she mortify her senses 23092030982350923498 times trying to eat a boiled egg for breakfast???" :hehe:

But seriously speaking, it is a really great book! Good recommendation!

I must admit, reading this book was part of what made me stay in religious life so long!!! I wanted it SOOOOO badly, especially after reading that!!! I must have read it at least three times. I loved it!!!!

St. Alphonsus Liguori is one of my FAVORITES. If I had known him better when I received the habit, I would have asked for the name Sr. Marie Liguori :)

Awww, whenever I hear his name, I am always reminded of "Sr. Liguori" from "The Trouble with Angels"! :smokey:

The Cantata of Love by Blaise Arminjon, S.J. - a good introduction to the Church Fathers, as well as probably being to the BEST book to understanding the Song of Songs. The website for Ignatius Press is down currently, but it's cheapest to buy directly from them I think, usually. The newer editions have a different cover, but the book is the same.

Jesus Appeals to the World: The Unceasing Act of Love Revealed to the Capuchin Nun, Sr. Mary Consolata by Lorenzo Sales, C.M. If I had the money, I would buy a copy of this book to put in every library, chapel, doctor's office, bus stop, and hotel room in the whole world... and anywhere else that someone unsuspecting would stumble across it. But alas, I do not have the money. :sadwalk: Most of you are probably tired of me mentioning this book again and again... but I can't help it! ^_^

The Perfection of Sisters or Holiness of Life, by St. Bonaventure... if you can find it, I think it's a tad difficult to find... We had lessons on it in the monastery, I haven't actually read it myself, but the lessons were fantastic, so the book must be good. You can get an ebook of it from here .)

Not a book, but a document by the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life called Starting Afresh from Christ is basically a must-read.

Also, if you're going to look to get any of these books, check prices on DealOz.com... even if you only want new books, it finds the best prices online... and if you don't mind used books, you'll save even more, and many times the books are practically in perfect condition! :saint:

That's all for now, I may think of some more later. :)

Oh my goodness -- I totally forgot about those! I especially loved A Right to be Merry and The Meaning of Vocation. I would especially recommend the latter for those that are in the very beginning stages of discernment and wondering what exactly a vocation to the religious life is. Just AMAZING.

Yeah, that's it, although I'd still suggest getting it from Ignatius because you'll end up spending the same, or less, on a new book as you would on a used copy from amazon.
