Luigi
PHILIPPINE Duchesne, if you please. She was baptized Rose Philippine, that is true. But her family universally called her Philippine. St. Sophie Barat addressed her as Philippine (for 10 years face to face and for another forty years in letters). Everyone called her Philippine, and she signed herself Philippine every time she signed her name (with two exceptions - property deeds). PHILIPPINE Duchesne, s'il vous plait. Andrew Kim Taegon, Paul Chong Hasang, and Companions (martyrs of Korea).
I was really moved just by reading the wikipedia article on Andrew Kim Taegon http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andrew_Kim_Taegon
In 1846, at the age of 25, he was tortured and beheaded near Seoul on the Han River. His last words were: "This is my last hour of life, listen tome attentively : if I have held communication with foreigners, it has been for my religion and for my God. It is for Him that I die. My immortal life is on the point of beginning. Become Christians if you wish to be happy after death, because God has eternal chastisements in store for those who have refused to know Him."
Usually I only remember to pray for Korea when the North shoots missiles over my head but the stories of these saints have left an impression on me and so I will pray for their country more often.
