Just the normal amount -- typically 3 years full-time. You also have to take an additional bar exam for admission to the patent bar.

Apparently in Canada the tests to become a patent lawyer are brutal. People take it over years and years, sometimes decades. It has an ever worse rep than the tests to be a CA.

Here it takes a few extra months. It's about as rigorous as most state bar exams ... so still tough, but not a decades-long endeavor.

Patent work is fascinating, but tough.
