The Medicare levy is calculated at the rate of 1.5% of your taxable income.

How is that sustainable?

I don't think anyone here is against heath care reform-- what we are against is THIS BILL. Most people were in favor of some sort of portability reform, assurance that insurance can't drop you as soon as you get sick, more options for the unemployed and self-employed to get less expensive coverage. I don't think anyone was looking for education loan reforms to be included in a health care bill. And certainly NO ONE wanted passage of this legislation if it exempted states whose senators agreed to vote for it if their state wouldn't have to help fund it.

Yeah, that last bit bites. I hate that both Nebraska and Louisiana were involved.

I hope Ben Nelson finally loses his seat.

I'm still trying to figure out why they didn't make the common sense move of tort reform.

I believe in the end they cut Nebraska out. Louisiana still got a hefty bit of pork with the excuse that they are still hurricane ravaged so it shouldn't count as pork... somehow.

It's because our entire systems are based on universal care. In the 60's it was a ground-up reworking of the entire medical system, and taxes to match. The reason it's going to cost so much for you guys is because the current private system stays in place, but insurance coverage is being extended by the gov.

Also: the amount of people WITHOUT health care in the US is equal to the entire population of Canada. The extension of care to these people is gonna cost the entire amount of what we pay yearly for ALL our health care. The scale is unbelievable.

If Americans want socialized health care, you should overhaul the entire system, slash wages (your doctor's make an insane amount more than ours, ditto for nurses and all other health workers) bulk purchase all medical supplies and equipment etc etc etc.

There are obvious reasons why not to do this:

1- Waiting: 6+ months for an MRI, 6+ hours for an emergency room visit

2- Taxation: oh so much

3- Morality: it's pretty tough to be a Catholic health care worker around these parts - don't want to perform an abortion? NO job for you!

4- Cost: soooo... how much does a needle actually cost if there is no competition for the product. Answer: As much as the producer wants! Same for all other med stuff.

However: No one. No one. Goes without the best care we have to offer.

Once again it is proven that Louisiana has the most corrupt state gov't in the Union.
Most Louisianans will not deny this. That's why when you buy a car in Louisiana (or move one here from out of state), you have to pay twice the taxes...one portion in actual taxes and one portion in "registration fees."

Best trick...before you move, gift it to a friend and have him gift it back to you after you move. Gifts don't require the fee...

Actually, the 6+ hours for an emergency room visit is already that way in some places. When Jennie was having extreme hyperemesis gravidarum (morning sickness) and was vomiting stomach acid in the ER waiting room, we still had to wait over 2 hours while they treated people with superficial cuts.

Sickening.

Yep.

Sure, but with the long waits, the expensive products, etc., how good is your best care, really?

And don't forget that treatment would no longer be based on what is best for the patient, but what is most cost effective.

Indeed. Which is why I suspect in the future we may see changes such as, "we will only cover 2 births per couple," or something along those lines.

Because, as Howard Dean so boldly put it this summer when asked that at a town hall meeting last fall, no one in Congress wants to piss off the lawyers. (Okay, that's not a direct quote, but that was the gyst).... he's right, of course.

Well, of course, I know that...but why not piss off the lawyers? I think it'd be fun. :saint:

Seriously, though...it needs to be done. Now they've pissed off all the doctors, who are really far more important in society.

How many members of Congress have a medical background? How many have a law background?

This is based solely on an executive order that can be rescinded at any time. There is no legislation blocking the use of your tax money for abortions.
Executive orders as I understand to not over ride actual law. And even so the executive order will likely not be enforced, or very weakly.

I'm an experienced RN who has subspecialties in oncology and hospice. I'm pissed. So much so that I think that my nursing career might just be over. I'm investigating what I need to do to get credentialed as a teacher.
