I was thinking of taking a short (just a weekend or a full week) silent retreat somewhere this summer. Does any one know any nice places to go for a silent retreat?? (Preferably in Indiana or some where close) :))

I don't know of anywhere in Indiana, but I would recommend the Desert Experience retreat at the Visitation Monastery in Mobile, AL. I've heard great things and I plan to make the retreat myself when I am able.

pm MCTS... she goes to school near Notre Dame, and she might know of something.

Or the Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament. :saint: But that's in AL.

Marie-Therese

Pretty much any Visitation Monastery would have the opportunity for you to retreat there...that is a fundamental part of the Visitandine charism. The Tyringham, Massachusetts monastery might be closest to you, but I admit I didn't google to verify.

Since there have been several suggestions for Alabama already ;) the Missionary Servants of the Most Blessed Trinity run a hermitage that you can use. The link there is MSBT Hermitage.

Casa Maria, the Retreat House of the Sister Servants of the Eternal Word in Birmingham, AL has a number of directed weekend silent retreats. I don't see any for the summer, however -- the next one is April 16-18. http://www.sisterservants.org/schedule.php Well worth the trip to Alabama.

Also, the community of St. John in Princeville, IL (right outside of Peoria) would be PERFECT. http://www.communityofstjohn.com/ -- You can see they have some retreats listed here and the retreat schedule they during the day is just absolutely, absolutely wonderful. They welcome people to come and do a private silent retreat, also ... please, it really is worth the call! Call 309-385-1193 and ask for the Guestmaster (Ext. 218)

This is also a great community for anyone discerning. Princeville is GREAT for that, because not only do they have a priory for the Brothers of St. John, they also have a convent of the Contemplative Sisters of St. John. (They also have Apostolic Sisters, but they are in New Jersey ... still, you get a good idea of their life by meeting the Contemplative Sisters, too).

you could go to the farm in bloomington. my friend colin was on silent retreat there 2 weekends ago. you could also go to gethsemani (sp?), kentucky (i think that's the town...) where thomas merton is from. dominic went on a silent retreat there.

I would recommend the Passionist nuns in Whitesville, KY. Great for a silent retreat. They are good at that ;)

There will probably be a wait ... I contacted the Intercessors back in November 2009. Long story short -- I'm still waiting to see if there is a possibility for doing a retreat in May/June 2010. There's a waiting list.

Try St. Meinrad in Indiana, or the Ferdinand Benedictines Motherhouse near there.

St. Meinrad's (Benedictine) was recommended by my former pastor.

I know this isn't near Indiana, but when I went for Brother Bruno's (staretz) profession weekend, their retreat house is open for self directed silent retreats. It's incredibly amazing. I felt like I was the only one there, even though there were others. None of the rooms are equipped with electricity so you have to use battery operated lanterns at night. The chapel is just a short walk up the path and the guest refectory is truly beautiful and all the monks are wonderfully hospitable.

The abbey where Brother lives is Monastery of Christ in the Desert in New Mexico. I created a video of his profession weekend and you can view it here
Or

If you go to christdesert.org you can view some photos as well as locate more information about the abbey. It's truly beautiful and the silence is so soothing.
