metal bands that i listen to range from Black Sabbath, who coined the term (and are essentially the most successful Catholic rock band in history... look up the lyrics to "After Forever." their first three albums show their faith (before they got into cocaine, amongst other things...))

Now I have you with me, under my power
Our love grows stronger now with every hour
Look into my eyes, you will see who I am
My name is Lucifer, please take my hand

I'm afraid you're mistaken if you think Black Sabbath are Catholic, they wrote Satanic songs on their first album and it has an inverted cross inside the little booklet thing in the CD case. Also, they only wrote songs like After Forever and Lord of this World so people would stop calling them Satanic.

Sorry, I'm like a waliking encyclopedia of BS.

...Black Sabbath that is, alsthough i know quite a bit about the other type of BS as well.

Is As I Lay Dying anti-religion or even anti-Catholic? A song their last CD seems to be criticizing religion, and this is after their singer produced an anti-Catholic album for another Christian band (Serpent Servant by Impending Doom). There are also images of what looks like Mary with her eyes/face rubbed out from the album's artwork. I've listened them for quite a while, so I really hope they are not actually anti-Catholic... :ohno:
The Plague (from The Powerless Rise)

Just like the spread of disease...
Debt and guilt or guilt and decree, the masters that we please.
Yet if we seek help for infirmities, we are made twice the sons of hell as before.

Reach out your hand. Reach out your hand, only to be plagued by disease.
Reach out your hand. Reach out your hand, only to be plagued by disease.

While religion tries to blame what we cannot see, I accept that part of the problem is me.
It was never a sacred mandate to accept conformity, through select revelations that we choose to believe.

Another blind guide replacing divine eyes.
Familiarity is the great deception, disguised by authority, sealing out subversion.
Whitewashed tombs have hidden the truth, for we unknowingly worship icons of ordinary life.

Reach out your hand to find forgiveness, only to be plagued by disease.
The horrors of beliefs and customs, camouflaged by commonality.
Reach out your hand, reach out your hand. Reach out your hand, reach out your hand.

I still believe that there is hope for us, but I believe we must look outside the sanctuaries of oppression that have brought our world so much pain...
Another blind guide replacing divine eyes (eyes).
Whitewashed tombs (whitewashed tombs) have hidden the truth.

Reach out your hand to find forgiveness, only to be plagued by disease (plagued by disease).
Reach out your hand to find forgiveness (reach out your hand), only to be plagued by disease.
Reach out your hand, reach out your hand.
AILD are Christians, why that would even come into question is beyond me. A lot of Protestants have a weird definition of the word "religion", which isn't worth getting into and I have a headache right now, anyways.

I saw AILD a lot in like 2002-ish (once in a basement, once in a DIY all ages venue, once at a Christian venue) and they struck me as really serious Christians. Tim Lambesis, the singer, even left a secular project a friend was doing, because there was going to be profanity in it. I once got a ride home from them in their van once and talked with them during the ride (sorry for the name drop there...). They're very strong Christians, so much so that when they made it big and were on MTV2, they turned down an invitation by Hugh Heffner to stay over the Playboy Mansion... As far as I know, they're A+ solid dudes. What they're most likely criticizing in that song are certain elements within the Protestant church that are judgmental, unloving, and focus on how people appear than the actual state of their heart. It is possible that they're talking about Catholics, but it's not clear. The artwork I am not sure what to make of, but something like decayed, washed-out statues was probably what they were going for there. And given the title, it looks like the cover has a theme connected to the spiritual restoration of some things.

Anyhow, if you're concerned about this and the artwork, you should have contacted the band before posting this. This is how rumors get started, man...

I just wanted to hear about how people interpreted the lyrics and artwork. I wouldn't have thought about contacting them directly, and it might have sounded like a ridiculous question anyway, although I actually have contacted a couple of not as well-known christian metal bands directly quite a while ago, to ask if and why they were against the Catholic Church, and they just gave me diplomatic or ambiguous answers.

I have actually watched AILD all four times they have toured Australia and they have been one of my favourite bands for a while, so I was just a bit concerned about it.
