Ephrem Augustine
I get really confrontational, look them in the eye, and ask them if they would prefer that I said their mom's name in vain like the s word everytime i was upset. Usually I am more vulgar than that, but definitely aggressively clear. I have no incentive to be polite with people who are deliberately impolite in these kind of instances. Lil Red
I have a difficulty in figuring out how to deal with this issue. I'm just about the only practicing Christian I know. Many of the people close to me take the Lord's in vain habitually, "Jesus!" this and "Jesus!" that. Sometimes I try to politely correct them, but it's habitual and since they are not Christians, they have no incentive to stop. If I tried to correct them each and every time, I think they would just be annoyed by all my nagging. They might try to stop in front of me just so I wouldn't say anything, but they wouldn't really change. So would it not backfire to nag them all the time and coming across as an irritating representative of Christianity? Yet when I just let it pass, I feel guilty that I'm just letting it happen. So what do I do? Does anyone else have these situation, and how do you deal with it?
+JMJ+ if it is someone i know well, then i will ask them to refrain, stating, "That hurts my ears". If it not someone I know well, then usually I just pray a Glory Be or "Jesus I trust in You" or "Jesus, I love you" or another short prayer in reparation.
i LOVE this idea!! i usually pray "forgive them Father, they know not what they do" but i'm going to start doing what you suggested
most people are not being deliberately impolite. Personally, I don't think that approach is the way to go. I agree with the point, but not with being agressive and vulgar about it. vee
For me if its someone I know I might give them a look and say "hey watch it" or something like that. If its someone I dont know, which is usually the case I say a prayer in reparation such as the prayer from the Divine Mercy chaplet "for the sake of His sorrowful passion have mercy on us and the whole world." For the OP Id suggest praying for them that God will give them the grace to speak His name in praise and glory instead. You could offer some sort of penance for reparation and their conversion too. Hilde
I don't really, if it's people I don't know very well I'm afraid of coming off as a weirdo. And the people who know me well don't swear that much. In Norwegian many of the swear words are religiously rooted, more so than in English. And they are usually pretty common for some people to use in , like, every sentence. A version of "Oh, my God" and some names of the guy downstairs.
