Anyhoo -- first off, I must say I LOVE the names you gave to each branch!!! Beautiful and oh-so-appropriate! Secondly, I heart the symbolism in your ideal habit. Just beautiful!!! I think my favorite bit you described is the twice-wrapped cord around the waist! Hypostatic union -- represent!!! And I'm all in favor of cape-wearing Postulants. Though I'd totally want the veil instead of a bonnet. I feel silly, my friends and I had gotteb carried away and wrote up brief costitutipns for each branch. Now that I look at them, a lot of their ideas were actually pretty interesting. What order does the postulant in the picture belong to?

What order does the postulant in the picture belong to?
That postulant is Sr. Margarita Schwind, OP -- she was one of the founding Sisters of the Dominican Sisters of St. Joseph. The picture is from a collection of pictures celebrating her Jubilee last year. I can't remember the name of her original community, though I believe it was based in Germany and sent Sisters to mission South Africa. Hmmm... now I'm curious! The Dominican Sisters of St. Joseph, however, do not have postulant habits like the one pictured above, but instead ones that pretty much look just like the Nashville Dominicans' postulant habits. Originally they had navy blue skirts and vests like the Sisters of Life and DSMME, but then went back to black "because it was more Dominican -- black and white". And while I think the Dominicans look great I would design my habit in brown, black, or anything dark because I am a magnet for stains.

vee
Hmm true it is too form fitting for a habit. We need action figures that wear something baggy.
Muus
A suggestion for nice veils. I'm looking for the 'toka' pattern (see the image). The SSVM sisters wear this under their veil. Also I'm looking for pattern of veils and maybe some habits? Do have someone some suggestions?
They make their own pattern for their tocas/caps. And it tends to vary a bit depending on how big one's ears are. Hmmm... When I first saw the toca/cap, my first thought was, "Amish bonnet!!!!" (True story.) So, here's a pattern that I found to be the closest to what they have: The exceptions would be: - white material (usually cotton) - the band/brim goes forward more (and is a tad thinner than this picture), a bit past the hairline - and bring the ties behind the neck instead of under the chin - a rounded edge below the ears You know, actually... I think if that bonnet was tilted about forward a few inches and tied in the back... that could be pretty accurate. Ah, and there is no "poof" in the back.. the back lies flat against the head. Always keep your ears covered and show no hair. Hope that helps, Muus! P.S. -- The veil is quite simple to make compared to the toca/cap. Perhaps you can ask one of the seamstress Sisters for a copy of the pattern they use? In the U.S. for quite some time, only one Sister knew how to make habits (minus veils). She'd spend about a week at the novitiate before Investiture sewing up a storm day and night. (It was REMARKABLE! To say the least, maté was a necessity of life during this week.) Now I think there may be a few others that have learned.

It might give you some ideas that you could try to copy. Besides the obvious benefit that it makes the habit more special if you make it yourself, it also means that a few sisters aren't sewing habits day and night. Also (and I hadn't thought of this before your post), it means that everyone in the Order knows how to make a habit!

One of my friends was terrified about how hers would turn out since before she entered she had never sewn anything a day in her life! To say the least, she did have some extra help, but her habit turned out BEATUFIUL!
