I'd be very happy to let you all know how it goes if I attend. It would just be more excellent if some PMers could go too! I really hope that this day of discernment happens and goes well!

Don't look at me! Yes, I live in the Chicago area and have a working automobile, but even in my most delusional moments I can no longer pretend that I could pass for 30, except perhaps if I was wearing one of those burkas that even covers your eyes.

Also, I don't think I have the temperament of a Poor Clare, except that the idea of an Order that doesn't wear shoes is very appealing. I dislike shoes in general, and never wear shoes when I'm inside my house. I do wear shoes to go outside, but prefer sandals to shoes.

You don't say in your post which order this is, but can I guess the Paulist Sisters?

I worked at 180 N. Michigan Ave for several years and had NO idea there was a convent a few doors away. But, I do vaguely remember a Catholic bookstore that I think was Paulist. I guess the convent might have been on the floors above the bookstore.

I was thinking the same thing, so I Googled it and it is the Daughters of St. Paul.

Wow! Every once in awhile I remember the strangest bits of trivia. (I didn't Google it before I posted my answer.)

Why can I remember that the bookstore a few doors away from where I worked a long time ago was Paulist, but I'm constantly losing my keys?

Woops, sorry. Yeah it's the Daughters of St. Paul. Not associated with the Paulists.

Yup, the Daughters of St. Paul in Chicago live above their bookstore.

Here's a few more details: Come and See Discernment Retreat!

We will especially focus on the love relationship between us and God in our prayer lives (for all of God's awesome children), and then a discussion of what it means for a consecrated person. God is awesome!!!

The Poor Clares canceled their day of discernment. Not enough people were able to come. :( At least it works for me. I wasn't sure I could go anymore!

If anyone attends discernment retreats for different communities, I would be very interested in learning what it was like. Did you get to meet the community leadership? Other sisters? Did you feel like you were being recruited or introduced? Did you learn a lot about the community? Different apostolates, spirituality? Were you pressured to apply? Was application even mentioned? Did you enjoy yourself? What did you think of the other women on the retreat - people you could live with? Could you return for a longer visit?

It is distinctly cheating, IMHO, that the PaulINES and PaulISTS have very similar apostolates but are very different in mindset. Are things not confusing enough already???

It also doesn't help that the guy who founded the PaulINES apparently couldn't get through a week without establishing a new community. Seriously, people!
The next Vocations Weekend will be held at the Dominican House of Studies in Washington, DC from Friday, October 15, 2010 through Sunday, October 17, 2010. If you are interested in attending, please contact Fr. Benedict Croell as soon as possible. There will be limited space.

A vocation weekend is a no-strings-attached chance to spend time learning about the life of the Dominican Friars in the Province of St. Joseph and religious life in general. Come pray with us, talk with our student brothers, meet our older brethren, and most of all listen for the voice of Jesus who continually calls men to become preachers for the salvation of souls.
