I Am Furious!

I would call the manager, and if you can't reach him, insist on setting up an appointment and clarifying the whole matter. The rest of us can't do anything. Ask him what his intent is--what is the 'purpose' behind the uniforms. I think that they probably refer to Ireland and not parochial schools--after all, who these days really knows what Catholic uniforms look like? In this way, you can tell him how tasteless and unnecessary the whole thing is. The rest of us can't do much.

I will definitely write some letters to the aforementioned places about this!

i don't think you should take it so personally... :\ that's just how pop culture is.

Unfortunately, I think not taking some of these types of things seriously is what has helped to deteriorate moral standards and alter the definitions of self-respect and personal liberation.

How could you tell they were Catholic school uniforms, did they have crosses on them or something?
Does it matter? They're not called schoolwomen uniforms. They're not called school girls for nothing.

Doesn't matter what kind of school uniform it might have been, it was still sexualizing underage girls and not appropriate for a family restaurant. Sounds like it was basically a Hooters. Hopefully people will vote with their wallets in addition to contacting the restaurant.

+Praised be Jesus Christ!

Thanks so much Phatmassers!

Finally, a part of my fury does come from the fact that it is totally acceptable (even funny to some) that Catholics can be bashed, made fun of, mocked, etc., with no - or very little - consequence. It is very difficult for me to think of ANY other religion that is so casually mocked and ridiculed - and when we show our disgust, righteous anger or sensitivity - we are told to get over it, it's not that big of a deal, etc. Television shows do it (Larry David's HBO show is a great example) and I do not believe - for one second - that if a Catholic were to do to other religions what we experience on a daily basis, we would be supported for our sense of humour and sense of fun.

As a woman of Faith, attempting my best to raise good, solid Catholics - attempting to keep them safe (my boys AND girls) - this does anger me. I believe when we stop paying attention to these things - little as they may seem to some of us- they become more and more acceptable - and less and less important.

I am deeply sorry if my fury is bothersome to some of you - but I hope you can stand back and think about this through the eyes of a caretaker (I'm even sure you need to be a woman or a mother to see the problems with this.)
I'm really happy that you notified us of this! Don't be sorry if some are bothered by your anger and passion about this--you're being proactive about an issue that not only offends people on a religious level, but this restaurant is catering to an unhealthy depiction of (too) young women.
But how can you be so sure that they were Catholic schoolgirls?
If you're sitting in a room and someone just says the phrase, "Catholic Schoolgirls attire," what else might you think of?

I am from Los Angeles, and have a lot of connections in youth ministry out there, I will contact some of them soon over this.

This is a place I have never been, and will make sure to publically avoid.

TradMom,
That is really outrageous, I think it's definitely something the Catholic League would be interested in and they should be told. I'm not real surprised however. Lingerie makers have been selling this stuff for years. If you google "catholic school girl costume" you will see there are a lot of merchants selling such things all designed to be as offensive as possible for Halloween or any other occasion.
If you search eBay you'll see plenty of the same stuff. It's a crying shame more Catholics do not protest such things. Imagine anyone offending Jews or Muslims in the same way, there would be quite an outcry.

Sent them a message. The number on the website matches the number that TradMom posted, so I think it's the same.

TradMom,
You should be furious! Women will never truly be "liberated" and respected until we start to respect ourselves, stand up for our feminmity and demand respect. Sadly many girls my age instead of having support they have pressure!

You have my support!
Good going!
God Bless
PG~

Just to let you know, this sort of thing doesn't hapeen in actual British pubs.
True. And Varg, in the US, it is not the norm for all schoolkids to wear uniforms; it's often just the Catholic schools that mandate uniforms. Not like in the UK where all the kids wear uniforms, and there isn't really much distinction between the Catholic kids or CofE or whatever in terms of the appearance of their uniforms.

+St.Joseph, pray for us!

Dear Phatmassers,

I have never done this before, so forgive my passion (and fury!).

Tradmom,

I with you 100% and will contact the restaurant. I too believe that Bill Donahue of The Catholic League will be very interested in this.

I guess because they said they were a neighbor friendly restaurant. Plus they have chicken fingers on the menu.
