The list was last updated in 2009 so I'm not certain how accurate it is, but maybe this will help someone...:)

I have found the best thing to do is to contact communities directly because often a community does not advertise an acceptance of older vocations, but they still might consider this on an indivudal basis.

The communities on this list have not been individually contacted for some time, so it would be a very loose guide. Also, some of the communities have changed the age guideline, other links are no longer valid and so on...nevertheless, it is a place to begin and at one time had the most comprehensive and up to date listings of religious communities on the web. Each community was contacted personally, so the information was correct.

As nunsense mentioned, one should always contact a community no matter the age limit, if they feel God is calling them in that direction. One does want to be careful of being an exception - this must be discerned with extreme care. If one is accepted as an exception, sometimes formation can be more challenging.

Hope this helps!

The Sisters of St Benedict at Mount Benedict Monastery don't advertise this but they do seriously consider older vocations. They are a small, vibrant, joy-filled group of women with a variety of ministries.

Their website is www.mbmutah.org and their email is vocations@mbmutah.org.

blessings, Linnie

What is "old"? :) 45? In my experience the max and min age vary greatly.

I agree we should clarify what is meant by "older". Older than 45, 50, 55, 60?

It would be very helpful to be more specific in order to assist those seeking religious life at a mature age. :)

Considering that there are communities that set their limits to 30, "old" could be considered past 30 .... :)

Much love from this older follower of Christ :P

Recently, I had heard from a friend that she's nearing the "too old" mark for discerning with a specific community that has their cut-off at 28. Her spiritual director suggested that she go visit them, but when she called and told them her age, they said she was "too old". (She's newly 28.)

I'm only 27, but wow... I think for the first time in a long time, I actually felt "old" just hearing that. :paperbag:

Uh-oh... I think I lost my cane somewhere... maybe it's in the fridge.... :unclesam: :birds:

That's really unfortunate.

I mean, nowadays, many young women are going to college and earning four-year degrees before they even realizing (or are willing to respond) to a calling to the religious life. With the reality of debt for most college students, it could take her five or six years to pay everything off (unless she's one of the lucky few to be helped by certain foundations and generous donors). I think it could be more and more likely that young women are 27, 28, 29 before they're in a position to enter!

So, so true, TB!! Hopefully, more orders will be increasingly open to "older" vocations as it seems a majority of young women do go on to earn four-year degrees (if not even pursing graduate degrees).
