Veridicus
I remember when I found out Elton John was gay...I remember being really scandalized because I started thinking about his love song lyrics like "rolling like thunder under the covers" and suddenly the thought of 2 dudes popped in my head. Puke. Then my dad explained that some other heterosexual guy wrote most of the lyrics to Elton John's songs and that Elton composed the music for the lyrics. This helped me deal. On a serious note, I see your point...but we should perhaps be apprised of the ignorant ramblings of pop-culture if for no other reason than so we can make a ready and knowledgeable defense against its absurdity. add
Elton John is not an authority on anything except perversions. I do not know why the media would give him any credence. But what else would we expect from a man who previously said,"From my point of view, I would ban religion completely." I'm not sure what´s worse—Elton John´s ignorance or his intolerance. discerning_girl
As a lesbian (though celibate) Catholic, I must say that both Elton John's comments and the comments about gay people on this forum depress me. When will we find the balance?

He knows that I'm Christian and that we disagree about his sexuality, but we still have an awesome time working together and hanging out in a group setting. When will we find the balance?
I was trying to find that balance. There is a Christian obligation to be charitably intolerant of people for who live an active and scandalous homosexual lifestyle. And there is a Christian requirement for charity and compassion for those who live chastely with same sex attraction. The former is a grave and scandalous sin. The latter is a cross that must be carried and the support of fellow Catholics would go a long way to help in that burden. KeenanParkerII
here is a Christian obligation to be charitably intolerant of people for who live an active and scandalous homosexual lifestyle.
Charitably intolerant of the person or the person's sin? By charitably intolerant do you mean to say that we're committing an act of charity by denouncing their sin? I agree (big surprise lol), just making sure it's not a typo. Veridicus
Charitably intolerant of the person or the person's sin?
Intolerance for sin must be tempered by charity toward the sinner. Otherwise, intolerance may become simple bigotry which undermines any transforming potential that the charity coupled with intolerance may have engendered. It is morally impermissible to tolerate sin and it is our moral perogative as Catholic Christians to approach the sinner with charity. I do not believe you can be 'cheritable' toward the person's sin as the sin itself is repugnant. Fulton Sheen says it much better than me, but I lent the book out so I can't quote it here. I'm pretty sure we're on the same page. I was just trying to emphasize that an effective intolerance (of sin) is tempered by charity (toward the sinner) or else it devolves into mere bigotry or stigma bereft of redeeming character.
