Fasting And Weight Gain

Every year I gave up snacks, candy, sweets, cake, meat, dairy,ice cream, adult beverages and basically starve myself for lent and do not lose any weight, noteven one pound.

It's hard not to think about it, but fasting should not be done to lose weight. In fact for me, I am on a strict diet and know that fasting will throw it off, but I've just got to offer that up. I'm fasting to enter more fully into Lent and to get closer to Christ. If it disrupts my attempts at weight loss and getting fit, so be it.

I get below a certain calorie level, and I don't lose weight at all. Sometimes I can even gain weight. I'm genetically designed for long periods of famine I guess. I've also had damage to my thyroid, so that doesn't help.

By "fast food" I mean no meat or dairy. You know, fasting foods, vegan.[img]http://www.phatmass.com/phorum/public/style_emoticons/default/lol_roll.gif[/img]

This is very true. Also, if your aren't getting enough of your caloric needs met you should be aware that if you do lose weight from a severely restricted diet, the weight is firstly water weight and then if your body is starving it takes from your muscles first. It literally starts eating its own muscles (such as the heart and brain). When the body thinks that it is starving it latches onto the fat reserves in the body. On a starvation diet you lose muscle mass, not fat; then after you start eating normally again you are likely to gain weight because the body will take it all and put it into additional fat stores. (the body thinks there is a famine....) Basically any weight lost through starvation is usually doubled when normal eating resumes.

Other side effects of a starvation diet include, but are not limited to: lowered immune function, severe exhaustion, damaged metabolism, dehydration, nausea, fainting....

Overall, it is very unhealthy. Please don't do this to your body, its extremely damaging and makes you feel like croutons. Take it from someone who knows.

You may be eating more non-forbidden foods, that you aren't keeping track of- bread, potatoes, pasta, peanut butter.
Portion control is important in 'dieting'--I don't like that term--and hard to control, partic if you eat out.

Depends on your definition of starve, and how many carbs you [b]are[/b] eating. If you really wanted to lose weight you would give up pizza, pasta, potatoes, corn, and live on broccoli and brown rice. :)
