Ashley
I was wondering where in the bible the word "Pope" is. I don't see it anywhere. Why does the Catholic Church need a Pope anyway. It seems like they need someone to think for them, to read the Bible for them and to interpret it for them. Can't Catholics think for themselves? That's the impression I'm getting. The way Catholics are not allowed to disagree with anything their Pope says....
God Conquers
I don't see the word Trinity in the bible either. Do you use words which aren't in the bible in everyday life to describe things? Probably. Is that wrong? I hope not. Besides, the word Pope IS in the bible. Pope means Father. Jesus placed Peter in chharge of the earthly Church, made him the ROCK of the faith. Gave him the keys to the kingdom. So, the answer is yes, of course Catholics think for themselves. In fact, we think for ourselves way more than a protestant or "sola scriptura" Christian does. We rely on the teachings of 2000 years of holy Christians, men and women who lived much closeer to Christ and the apostles and learned directly from them, not by reading a book 2000 years later. Livin_the_MASS
Some old man huh? Well around here we have respect for Him and we adress as the Holy Father, Pope, Vicar of Christ, PA PA,. Please show more respect. We will adress your question. So what don't you don't think you have to submit to the Visible Head Of Christ? Well alot of people don't like us Catholic because of our obedience to the Pope and the Church. The morals that we stand by. So what issues do you have? Hananiah
I was wondering where in the bible the word "Pope" is. I don't see it anywhere.
Pope is Italian for father. The NASB has 1598 verses which contain the word father.
Why does the Catholic Church need a Pope anyway.
Because God chooses to speak through His representatives. He is not personally guiding every Protestant who reads the Bible; otherwise Protestants would not disagree so much on doctrine.
It seems like they need someone to think for them, to read the Bible for them and to interpret it for them. Can't Catholics think for themselves?
We can. Building a systematic theology is like building a house. If you screw up the foundation, the entire house will be wrong. If you screw up the wall framing, the siding will be wrong. If you screw up the roof trusses, the entire roof will be structurally unsound. Every part is interconnected, and one mistake compounds itself throughout the building. Obviously, the earlier the mistake, the greater the errors which will fill the entire house. Protestants have to build the entire house for themselves. Thus, if they make one mistake their theology will be filled with errors throughout. In contrast, the Catholic Church has infallibly laid down the foundation, set up the walls, and built the roof for us. However, the entire house is not finished. Many questions of doctrine are as of yet unresolved. This is where we are free to disagree, and debate, think for ourselves, and privately interpret Scripture and Tradition. We may make mistakes, but we have the Magesterium to assure that none of us make damning mistakes.
The way Catholics are not allowed to disagree with anything their Pope says....
This is not true. I disagree with many things John Paul II has said and done. Edited April 10, 2004 by Hananiah

That means the old man in Rome, Ashley.

And your thread in Open mic "die Catholic die" was that your friendly post??? You aren't probably going to get much of an answer from people tonight. We are trying to get ready for church (many of us)... ... And something I *think* Ashley is not mentioning is that she's Jewish. She mentioned that in the open mic. So Protestant agruements probably won't cut it with her... I am just guessing... no offense. Blessings. God wants people to come to Him on His terms. That's why, if you try to approach God as a Muslim, you will run into a brick wall. He won't respond to your heathen prayers. Likewise, if you try to approach Him as a Protestant who rejects the institutional, hierarchical, sacramental, teaching Church which He established, you will find yourself in a maze of contradictory doctrines and not know who to believe. Bruce S
Why Jason, you are now disagreeing with every Catholic site now, next you will disavow the Vatican web pages at the rate you are going. I don't make stuff up, I don't have to, the REAL stuff is hard enough to defend.
