Disregarding the principles of lent for a slight boost in attendance. The plot thickens. Marie-Therese
EDIT: so apparently they tried it without for a while and it DID hurt their business so they started using meat again to keep the sides more palatable. Now what?
Well, I am southern, so the thought of fish with green beans and potato salad is bizarre to me. But to do this willingly and knowingly is a different story...that is sad. Satan works subtly. Like Raphael said, can't they find some side dish that you just don't put meat in? Or are they mandated to persist obstinately in violation of the Lenten abstinence? I mean, dang, french fries and hush puppies and baked beans can't be that hard, can it? Personally, I think it says something about the fact that these people aren't very good cooks, if they can't manage to make a green bean palatable without chunking in a ham. Apotheoun
Good thing that the parish is not following the strict Byzantine fast, because then they would not be able to serve meat, fish, dairy products, wine or oil.

Perhaps the approach to the Friday Fish Fry taken by the parish is a bit off-kilter. Is it about making money, or about encouraging the faithful to keep the fast? I'm pretty sure that it is all about the mammon, with fish being the pretense for the event. Which scandalizes me.
