Five months hence, on Sunday 11 July 2010, a Mass of Thanksgiving is scheduled for 3:00 in the PM/afternoon to commemorate one hundred years since the foundation of Our Lady of Sorrows, North America's first monastery of cloistered Passionist Nuns. Our Lady of Sorrows is located in the Pittsburgh PA suburb of Carrick. A bishop will preside at the Sunday afternoon Mass.
To my knowledge, Our Lady of Sorrows Passionist Nuns in Carrick have no website, no webpage, and not even an e-mail address. Maybe they have one little page on the national membership of Consecrated Women Religious or whatever.
Our Lady of Sorrows was erected, in 1910, with foundress nuns from Tarquinia/Corneto, Italy, where Passionist founder St Paul of the Cross (Paolo Daneo) personally supervised the architecture of the monastery and the spiritual formation of its first superior, Madre Maria Crocifissa di Gesu; the Tarquinia Passionist nuns are the first and oldest of all the communities of cloistered nuns in the Passionist Order.
I believe it is correct to say that all the other United States monasteries of Passionist nuns existing today -- from the very traditional Missouri convent, to the well-publicized Kentucky monastery with its retreat house and its website and weblog, to the Scranton diocese convent with its post-conciliar changes -- have their roots in Our Lady of Sorrows in the greater Pittsburgh area.

I checked the diocese of Pittsburgh website for any information about them, and all I could come up with was a phone number. Too bad, as it also appears that they are the only cloistered monastery of women in the Pittsburgh diocese. I wonder how they are doing with regards to new vocations?

sistersindigo just mentioned them in another thread, and I had never heard of them before. Searching the internet, I found this thread from a few months ago .. and then a couple more links ..

http://cpcompassion....9/carney-3.html

http://news.google.c...=5876%2C3246168

okay, I can't get this link to work .. so here are the google results for "A Glimpse at Life Inside a Cloister" It's the first link .. http://www.google.co...l=&oq=&gs_rfai= And the story continues on pg E-3 .. just scroll past one page on the little window thing in the upper right corner, and you'll find it :)

I wonder when they have their retreats .. and they are not far from Steubenville. I'm sure a lot of young women there would be interested in attending them ..

Just in case anyone is as easily confused as I tend to be...regarding the link above to the "Compassion" article on retreats:
please note that there are two monasteries referred to in that article.
"The Convent" refers to Our Lady of Sorrows monastery of cloistered Passionist nuns.
"The Monastery", named at the beginning of the article, refers to the community of Passionist MEN.

I'm pretty sure I saw this following sister on EWTN a few years ago talking about her Passionist order and her vocation story. It was a beautiful story. I think it may have been with Fr. Pacwa or Life on the Rock.

I think Hassan knows this Convent and has even visited the nuns in question. If you were to get up with him in about a week, I'm sure he'd be happy to help you all get in touch with people.

Last I heard from him, the nuns seem to be doing quite well, are very friendly, and cook awesome food.

Hey, I'm a few days late here .. but I wanted to say, thanks for posting this. I've always greatly admired the Passionist charism and St. Paul of the Cross. Also, I recently found this little video on the community in Ellisville, MO (just outside St. Louis) .. http://www.youtube.c...h?v=5sKaJt74pD8 This looks like it may have been a clip or something from an older video made for the Vision Vocation people, and then put on youtube .. but anyway, it's neat. This community in Ellisville is really great .. http://db.religiousl...irl.nsf/org/390

Photographs of Tarquinia's Passionist enclosure!! This is a find, people. This Italian monastery is the oldest, the mother of all the cloisters of contemplative nuns in the "Congregation of the Passion," better known as the Passionist order.
The Tarquinia monastery has no website, and images inside the monastery are certainly rare outside of the native country, can't speak for Italy though.
Use this link: http://www.passionistnuns.org/blog/?p=200
and you have to scroll down through this lengthy post and look for the sepia-toned old photographs, from Tarquinia.
