I don't know what anyone else thought about this episode but I thought it was really well done for the secular media. I have read a lot of complaints and criticisms of Oprah and of the community about the show but I think it was well done and I am grateful for their witness to authentic religious life. What did you think?

God Bless
Sister Marie

I agree completely with your statement: "...it was really well done for the secular media" and would add, "especially for Oprah." I actually thought she would sensationalize even more on the whole "You'll never have sex?!?" issue. I thought the Sisters handled themselves so well, particularly in answering those types of questions. :)

And well, trying to put myself in a secular audience perspective, I found it to be pretty secular-viewer friendly, you know? Nothing too deeply theological or holier-than-thou, but instead they gave answers that most anyone could understand. They also showed themselves to be "normal" young women, you know? Young women that could be just like any other young women out there. Before they entered, they did "normal" things -- went to school, dated, worked, some were engaged, others led worldly satisfying lives, and yet, no matter how much they had gained in the worldly sense, it just wasn't enough. I hope that makes people really reflect on their own lives, especially for those that might think, "Hey, that Sister's pre-convent life sounds kind of like... mine!" Maybe some vocational seeds fell on fertile grounds... ;)

Perhaps from us that know more about the religious life (whether just by discerning with or living in various religious communities), it could have been too superficially focused, but if you know little about religious life... well, you probably learned a few things! :teach: :D I hope those that fell in the latter category found themselves with new (positive) brain wrinkles after seeing the show. :hehe:

I think I heard that this is her last season -- her contract was 24 seasons, I think.

Supposedly, she's retiring.

I think that Lisa Ling's comment at the end is very profound:

"...so in a way, rather than being very strict, their lives are actually very liberating."

I think that you are right. Who really knows.

I watched the nun episode when it first aired. It played a part in prompting me to move from just feeling the pull of monastic life to entering a formal process of discernment. Media coverage, flawed though it may be, does good things for religious life.

Note: for a more beautiful, nuanced outsider's portrait of monasticism, check out Kathleen Norris's The Cloister Walk.

I have seen it. When I first heard of it, I thought that my family was joking at first, but then I saw it. It was pretty cool seeing all of them. I did not know that they can even own a tv.
