rhetoricfemme
I've been thinking about taking up geneology as a hobby, for lots of reasons. I'd like to find out more about our family, although for me it's a bit trickier because I'm adopted (it was an in-family adoption so not difficult to track, just difficult to do). And I know that on my dad's side of the family they were raised Catholic, but I have no clue who was/is devout, or anything. I'd like to find those things out and a lot more. I'm kind of confused as to where I should begin, though. Have any of you worked on your geneology? Was it worth the time you put into it?
+JMJ+ my mom has worked 30+ years on her family and my dad's family genealogy. She's went back pretty far on both sides. Now when someone new comes into the family, their family history is interrogated out of them. she uses a certain program to track, but i'm not sure of the name of it. i'll ask her for some tips for a newbie. Archaeology cat
I used to do a lot of work on genealogy, but haven't in a while. Family Tree Builder, I think it's called, is pretty good. I'll have to see what else I've used, as I can't remember.
CatherineM
I love genealogy. I also use Family Tree Builder. A lot of my mom's was already done for me because of the DAR, but I have filled in some gaps, and have got my dad's back 200 years. I like the names and dates, but even more the stories. Reading an old will or newspaper article, or bit in a book written about them, is really neat. Just be prepared for anything. You may find scoundrels. CatherineM
I've told my husband that if we do go visit his relatives in England and Scotland that I will also visit mine, and since they are all in the ground, it could be an interesting trip. cmotherofpirl
My family has been wroking on ours for years and I inherited the bug. It can be quite exciting to find a link to the past or distant cousins. I use Family tree Maker from the Mormon site.

I'm really excited to see how far I can get. It's generally fascinating, but I also have a sister who has been wanted to do this stuff for a long time, but she's so busy that she doesn't ever get the chance. Archaeology cat
Despite having lived in England for over 3 years now, I still haven't made it to my ancestral ground. My dad's family are from Norwich originally.
