sparcle318
ok... i was at school and one of my friends asked me what all of the candles symbolized in mass, and i didnt know the answer? So what do the different candles(lit during ordinary time) stand for? What is their purpose?
Pontifex
Candles are symbolic of the presence of the divine. When lit in Church they indicate that this space is sacred and holy. We light candles on both sides of the altar for this reason and at the ambo. What takes place in these particular places is Holy and Sacred. Then, of course, there is the sanctuary lamp, which is a candle encased in red to indicate the Presence of Jesus in the tabernacle; Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity. Peace, Fr. dUSt
Fr, If the tabernacle is empty, would the red candle be out? Or in other words, would the candle be burning only when He's present is in the tabernacle?
