Krush2k2
Every confession I've ever gone to-I've always left with the smallest penance. I've had a few freinds say they had to say a few rosary's, but thats about it. I usually get the ol usually 5 Hail Mary's, 5 Our Father's-any of yall ever gotten a huge penance? ShaRe! I guess it depends on the priest, so I must be lucky.
BLAZEr
One time I went to a priest who was a friend of mine, but I had never gone to confession to him before. He gave me the following as a penance: 1 Holy Hour in front of the Blessed Sacrament 1 Complete Rosary (at the time 15 decades) 1 Hour or Silent Meditation And 15 minutes of scripture reading a night for 1 week. It was absolutely nuts. I couldn't figure out if he was doing it to be funny or if he normally gave huge penances like that.
VeraMaria
This was not huge, but hard....when I was 10 I lied to my mom about going to ballet class (i was skipping)....and the priest told me to tell my mom the truth....lol, it wasn;t that hard when u think about it....but to a 10 year-old to tell your mom that you lied to her....lol, it was hard.... Joseph
The biggest penance I have ever got was to say an Our Father and a Hail Mary, but I have only been to confession maybe 10 times or less in my year of Catholic life so far.....I feel like I should be getting bigger penances, though. morostheos
I've never gotten really huge penances, but once for gossiping I had to say 5 nice things about the person I'd been gossiping about to the same people I had been gossiping with. I thought it was very appropriate though.
the_rev
On Wednesday I was told to pray the stations of the cross, but the good thing was it was with the living stations of our parish that travels, so I just prayed the stations as I was a part of it,
mulls
praying and bible reading i wish somebody would make me do these things when i didn't want to seems more like a blessing than a punishment
cmotherofpirl
Mulls it is SUCH a blessing. To hear someone say to you "I absolve you ". To know you are forgiven and God has forgotten. You feel overwhelming CLEAN.
BLAZEr
On a related note, I remember talking to a priest who said the reason he doesn't give big penances is to remind people that it's not "Them" who makes up the penalty for their sins, but Christ. Padre Pio once heard the confession of a notorious sinner who confessed adultery, immoral sex acts, abuse of his wife, and a murder . . . at the end of it Padre Pio gave the man 1 Hail Mary. The man was livid, he wanted a huge penance to make up for his sin. He angry told Padre Pio "That's it. I confess my horrible life and all my penance is one Hail Mary?" to which Padre Pio apparently replied "No, that is not all of your penance. If I were to tell you your actual penance you would die of fright." The man replied "Then how shall I do my penance?" And Padre Pio said "You say One Hail Mary, I will do the rest of your penance." I don't know if its true or not, but it's a cool Padre Pio story I heard. Apparently this man relayed this story a couple of years after Padre Pio died. theculturewarrior
My spiritual director once told me to write a magazine article for my penance. Something about being inside the priest's office for confession seems to make the penance bigger.
homeschoolmom
The one and only penance I have ever gotten was to read and meditate on Psalm 32. Works for me...
VeraMaria
Once my priest told me to read Corinthians 13: 4-8, inserting myself into "Love". "Vera is patient...(oops), Vera is kind...(oops)...Vera does not boast..." etc I would suggest you try it, it makes you aware of many things...
