I remember a Good Friday that I sang at the service, then the choir director and I ran out to eat. We were so caught up in all the things we had to do before Living Stations, Vigil Mass and Easter Sunday we had Big Macs meals eaten before we remembered it was not on;y friday but GOOD Friday

Luigi
It's not required. It wqas required for a long time, but was lifted during the Second Vatican Council - at least here in the US. And it was never required in Spain, as a reward for having discovered and evangelized the New World. Some people prefer the old ways, and there's certainly nothing wrong with abstaining on Fridays (the point was to remind ourselves that Jesus was crucified - on a Friday - and do some reparation for our sins), but if you haven't been abstaining (because you never knew about it), you haven't done anything wrong (because it isn't required, which is why you were never taught about it).
According to the 1983 Code of Canon Law, "Abstinence from meat, or from some other food as determined by the Episcopal Conference, is to be observed on all Fridays, unless a solemnity should fall on a Friday" (CIC, can. 1251). By an indult (that is, by special permission), in the United States, one may replace abstinence with another form of penance on Fridays outside of Lent. That said, the obligation to do penance on all Fridays is still a law of the Church, and those who fail to do so violate the Church's law. In short, abstinence on all the Fridays of the year is a universal law, and it is only by special permission in some places that one is not obliged to abstain on all Fridays.
