Ed Normile
The Crusades began after muslim invasion, not before. They were a response, not an opening statement. Had the crusades not occured, Martin Luther might have been named Mohammed Laden.
This is what escapes most people, I guess many feel they should have allowed the wanton killing of any non muslims to continue unabated. I always ask protestants when they bring up the crusades how they feel their particular sect of protestantism would have fared if this was not addressed. ed
Ed Normile
On the inquisition, I doubt the church knew of the extent of the abuses of this event at the time they occured, especially as the monarchy using this as a means to eliminate opposition. In an era where communications were made by messengers over perilous distances including passage on ships too report any incidents of abuse, and the dangers of trying to report anything that would be unflattering to the powers to be I am sure it would take many years for this to come to light, and many more years before it could be proven and then finally dealt with. It is not as if there would have been a daily newspaper or an electronic medium one could easily send their concerns over. Anyone able too afford the means necessary to send a messenger with a negative report to rome would no doubt have been under scrutiny already by those involved in such abuse. Many who even spoke out against it were either condemned or tortured as an enemy. ed Edited January 30, 2010 by Ed Normile
